I have over a GB of audio from a particular artist that obviously won't fit on a CD; are there any problems/issues if I try to copy all this material to a DVD which will accommodate all of these mp3s? I've never heard anyone speak of using a DVD to store audio only but can't imagine why it wouldn't be acceptable to do so.
Thanks,
Dan

Sure, i do it all the time.
Except MP3's, not worth the dvdr.

You can store anything you want on a dvdr.
It is just another storage medium.
Just burn as a data disc and drop anything you want into it.
But if you want to play them back from the disc on any kind of a standalone player, it has to be able to read those specific types of files from that specific type of disc. -
Noahtuck,
What kind of file does the typical standalone player require? Will just recording it as 'data' be sufficient to hear it in my car stereo system?
And what did you mean by "mp3's not worth the dvdr"? Since I have 1.2Gb in total, I'd have to create 2 CD's - would rather have it all on 1 DVD.
Thanks for your reply.

I just meant i don't bother with MP3's usually because they are at the lower end of the quality range.
And for your car stereo, i don't know.
Some will play only standard audio cd's, some will play mp3's from a cdr & not a dvdr, & some will play mp3's from either type of media.
CD only players will NOT play dvd media, even if it is a dvd player & will play a dvd movie, it obviously will play dvd's, but that still does not mean it will read the MP3 format, or read them from a dvd if it does.
Does the owner manual state what formats and media it will play ?
Do a search on google for the make & model number & see.
Is it a newer system ?
You might be able to look it up somewhere like bestbuy, if it's still being sold, and the specs there will state what it plays, ect ect ect -
I know that mp3 is a compressed format but have always been very happy with the quality. What format do you prefer?
Thanks again for your tips.

The chances are slim to none that your car stereo player will handle DVD-R. Check your manual first to verify. Even for standalone DVD players that can play MP3s, there are very few that will play them from DVD-R.
Have a good one,

Neomaine,
I'm not too optimistic that I can store my mp3's successfully on a DVD for successful playback, but I'm prepared to sacrifice 1 as a coaster.
Thanks,

Store the mp3 on dvd since you can use them later for what ever purpose you want to do with them,mp3 can be very good quality and high enough bitrate(224),i bought a car stereo that plays mp3 thru usb sticks so no more discs.
I think,therefore i am a hamster. -
you can store your mp3s in a dvd disk.do burn them as data, as disk at once.better to include folders of a maximum 200 songs in each folder. try to play it in your car stereo. if it plays well. otherwise you can have all the songs safe at least for another ten years. you can use it in computers and can write to any media, any format in future. it is a question of a dvd disk. as u suggested be ready to sacrifice a disk and find the joy. be sure to share ur experience.

by the by you can store upto 4 gb music in a dvd disk. dont afraid to do burn them because i use them in my thompson dvd player and it plays well.

As neomaine stated above, check your manual for specific playback formats and media support..And I have to agree with Johns0, you can encode very good quality MP3s using a high enough bitrate and most (when ABX testing) have shown, have trouble differentiating them from the original wav(s)..
After all, beauty is in the EAR of the beholder..and since none of us share ears, only you can decide/judge on what is good quality...
.. Stick as many as will fit the DVDR and store them, even if your player won't support it, it still makes sense for storage and for later use...Good luck!..

As far as playback on a standalone DVD player I've seen a DVD authoring application mentioned in the past for this.
If you wanted to make your own it's pretty simple as long as your application allows it. You use the menu structure by itself. For example you're main menu would be a list of albums. You have submenus for each album listing the tracks. The last menu would have the track itself as background audio.....
Like I said I saw an application specifically for doing this. Probably much easier and I'd imagine it would use the tags if present... -
Maybe this?

Thanks to all for your replies. Looks like the consensus is to store my mp3's on DVD and play them from an MP3 player or CD.
http://www.audio-dvd-creator.com <=looks like it addresses my issue but I'll have to think about that $40 price tag.
Thanks again, forum!
