Glad to help. I was definitely interested in getting the complete original set and not the "trilogy" set.Originally Posted by gl99

Donatello - The Shredder? Michelangelo - Maybe all that hardware is for making coleslaw?

please forgive this apparently gratuitous bump but I did pop in two of the Star Trek original 6 bluray discs to get a disc size reading.
@Gll99 - you should be happy to know they both appear to be full dual layer bluray discs:
Star Trek 1 Bluray:
And Star Trek 6:
Aside from the fact that I know by "feel" that these are full on high def transfers I would propose to you that the sheer file size alone on the disc would seem to confirm that. Sorry for the delay.Donatello - The Shredder? Michelangelo - Maybe all that hardware is for making coleslaw? -
I think it's fair to say that BluRay is simply a vehicule with a huge trunk space - what's in the trunk is "buyer beware".
Now that i read this post i will be more watchful on what i spend my 30$ on so "Excellent Post" ! -
@yoda313
I'm really glad to see that they didn't cheapen out by squeezing them to single layer discs.
btw) I finally bought a 12' HDMI cable and an hdmi to dvi adapter for my 24" 1080p monitor. Played on the ps3 the image is sharp and clear. Unfortunately at 24" even the 480p material looks crisp with deep blacks so at that size I don't think I could honestly say I could spot the difference. I would probably have to be very critical and concentrate on background detail to spot something but that wouldn't really be fair since I don't watch movies with that kind of an eye. On the site I quoted earlier where they did a movie by movie review of the discs, one of the criticism was about the plastic effect of the thick makeup on the aging actors. I recently watched a SD dvd of Street Kings and Keanu Reeves' pancake makeup was very visible even at that 24" size on SD DVD. I would expect that even more with HD so it's no surprise and that to me should be seen as a positive not a negative about HD. The makeup will just have to get better. I'll have to wait until I buy a larger HDtv set to make a fair assessment about the overall value of HD /Blu-ray in general.
I'm still very happy with my purchase and will continue to add to the collection when I find the titles my wife and I enjoy.

There's probably more to learn but so far......
Now I know that secondary video is often presented in it's original release format and could be as low as 480i.
It's also important to note that even HD movies/tv shows can be presented in 4:3 aspect ratio if the original source was produced that way. An example is Star Trek TOS season 1 on Blu-ray.
Right now because the majority of the movies I've looked at in my short experience are from major studios they may be all properly sourced. Like montrealer says it's something to keep an eye on.
There is a need for clarity in terminology on the part of the industry and to ensure that this information is available on the exterior of the packaging and should not be blocked with price or inventory barcode stickers by the retailers.There's not much to do but then I can't do much anyway. -

Thank you for original post and the awesome discussion it spawned. I found it most informative and entertaining.
