  2. Yes, you need to convert them. Exactly what you need to do depends on what you mean by "mp4 movies". The Philips 5990 likes Divx/Xvid with AC3 or MP3 audio in an AVI container. You could always make regular movie DVDs too.

Post what MediaInfo says about your videos.

    it's a x.264 encoded video in an MP4 file

  4. The 5990 can't read the MP4 container and can't decode h.264 video. You probably have AAC audio which it also can't decode.

You can try converting with Xvid4PSP, AviDemux, VirtualDub...

The 5990 can recognize and play .mp4 files (you'll notice they do show up on the 5990's browser) - however, the MP4 videos generally have to be DivX/Xvid video streams with an MP3 audio stream. In other words, basically whatever the 5990 will play in AVI/.divx format, just remuxed into the MP4 container.

The only advantage with playing those sorts of MP4s through the 5990 is, in my opinion, that the 5990 won't do the little 'index' bit before playing an MP4. But since it's not really that much of a hassle, anyway...

(Edit: forgot to mention that it'll also properly recognize AVIs renamed to .mp4, as well.)

You're right. I keep forgetting that. And yes, only the same codecs that it plays in AVI will play in MP4.

I have a bunch of mp4s I'de like to play on the 5990. When I play them, I get sound but no video and i see a message saying "codec not support"...or something to that affect. Whats my best option? To convert the files to avi? Below is some information on one of the files from MediaInfo.

    Format : MPEG-4
Format profile : Base Media / Version 2
    Codec ID : mp42
    File size : 49.4 MiB

  9. MP42 is a very old Microsoft MPEG 4 part 2 codec. The Philips players do no play it. You'll have to convert to Divx/Xvid.

I make mp4's with Nero Recode and my 5990 plays them. What does Recode use as audio?

Are there any free programs available that will convert mp4 to divx/xvid?
