OK, I've got a movie originally on 4 SVCDs.

I've dmuxed it, transferred the files to my hard disk, created a project
file in DVD2AVI, cut out the first 15 seconds and cropped the bottom 10% of the picture (and some on the sides to maintain aspect ratio) to get rid of some, uh, "static" that shows up every 10 or 15 minutes or so.

I fed this mess into TMPGenc, using constant quality 80 and VCD NTSC with 200 min 1150 max and 128 audio which results in four mpeg files 380 or so megs in size, letting me fit 2 per VCD. Quality is pretty nice, 'cept for the fact that some macroblocks show up during a couple og high motion scenes.

Here's my problem. My buddy lost his hearing from whooping caugh when he was a kid. I want to add subtitles and do the whole process above over again. I've got two sets of subs for the movie in question, but neither are set up for the "version" I'm working with. One is for two disks and is cut at a different place than mine. The other is for three disks.

I tried to open the AVI2DVD project in Vdub to expriment with the subtitle filter, but the project file will not load. Do I need to use AVISYNTH?

Also, any suggestions on helping me get the sub files matched up with the segments I'm dealing with?

Should I try to find that "I-film" program and make selectable subs on an SVCD? Will that accept my sub scripts?

Any other general advice? (Remember, this is for a good cause!).
