  2. obviously you didn't read through the site or else you would know that what you are talking about is the

    miniDVD format

DVD authored video burned as DVD on CD-R

Problem is that MiniDVD's are very incompatible when it comes to DVD players because most DVD standalones see CDR's as being VCD or SVCD and do not read CDR's as DVD's.

miniDVD == Pure Utter Crap [yes carp]

  4. WOW! your right some people can be mean, here let see if I can help.

In a word, yes you can record a DVD by using a Hardware MPEG1/2 capture card to record a VCD or SVCD onto a 80min. or some can do the 99min. CD-R's like I can, and it will play back on about 75% of the DVD players, SVCD though your down to about 10% players, and thats if you capture, and burn it correctly.
If this osunds to hard I would suggest a Home VCD recorder for ya, Sams club now sells the Tearapin VCD recorder for $199, I tried it out and it was easy to use, even records audio CD's, will use CD-R and CD-RW, but looks like a VHS copy.
I personally use the hardware MPEG2 recoder card in my computer and my SVCD's, look so much better, I actuallt captured a svcd at 704x480 at 6000(same as for a DVD-R) and on my new Daewoo 5700 it played back perfect and looked just like the original source.
here are some DVDplayers that will play VCD or SVCD

    Apex, 500w, 600a, 660, 1500, 800
    Daewoo 5700
    Toshiba 2050 - VCD only
    Panasonic RV31, RA60 VCD only
    Pioneer 343, 444, 341, 440

I have acrually tried all these machines and they play either VCD or SVCD.
Keep in mind a VCD is at 240 line of resolution the same as VHS
SVCD is at 350 lines very close to SVHS and Hi-8mm which is 400 but far short DVD which is 500 to 580 lines.
So I hope this sheads some light on this subject for ya.
