Hi all,
I have a Panasonic NV-EX1 camcorder connected via IEEE 1394 cable to my Vista PC but the PC doesn't detect the camera at all. I have tried connecting the camera to another PC running Windows 7 and it does detect the camera but I cannot capture from it. Windows Photo Gallery says camera is in use by another program (which it isn't) and every other application I have tried fails to capture.
Does anyone have any ideas what I can do? I don't mind running Vista or Windows 7
TIA
Darren

if it's on and in play mode there's not much more you can do. if you start playing a tape and go into my computer and double click on the cam icon does it show a video preview?
did you check that the firewire port is in the hardware manager and shows up and is listed with the proper model number and as ok? proper w7 driver? test the port with a different firewire device?
what version w7? the beta the rc or the rtm? -
In W7 (7100) it detects the camera no problem but in Move Maker or Photo gallery it says the camera is in use by another program (which it isn't). In Vista the camera is not even detected at all!

Do you have Nero/Pinnacle/Roxio stuff installed? They are notorious for hijacking the DV camcorder.

No John. Nope of those apps are installed. I've read on a few forums posts that Vista will not work with the NV-EX1. Something to do with 1394 vs 1394a.

Hi Darren,
You wrote "In W7 (7100) it detects the camera no problem but in Move Maker or Photo gallery it says the camera is in use by another program (which it isn't)."
I have exactly the same experience - NV-EX1 on a Fireware expresscard to my laptop. Windows 7 x64. I see the device in Control Panel, and all seems to be likely to work - then Windows Live Movie Maker says it is being used by another application.
Should I use a different application anyone?
All I want to do is grab my old DV videos on the computer for safe keeping - don't trust those old magnetic tapes from 1998 !!
Thanks for any help.

Among the issues with Nero and Pinnacle (also some versions of Adobe Elements and Cyberhome) is they load DV capture utilities on Windows startup that take control of the port. The fix is registry or app preference related but first you need to find which program is at fault, then Google the registry fix. In task manager, look at the processes running after startup but before you launch any video apps. Then close any processes associated with video apps.
Also, try WinDV for capture. I've seen WinDV take port control from Adobe Elements.Last edited by edDV; 9th Dec 2010 at 13:33.
