I am looking to get software that can copy a dvd to a dvd-r disc and I have been doing some research on which one to buy but I have got very stuck and I need some help.
As a layman when it comes to dvd or any disc copying I would presume a dvd copy software such as nero simply copy's the original discs content to another disc. This would be the same as copying from one video tape to another and if the original video flickers in the middle you will get the same result on the copied video tape.
Now that sounds very simple and straight forward but after doing the research on which software to buy I am very confused. I will use 1click and dvd clone, probably the two most common dvd copy software's out there, to explain my problem. 1click releases so many updates so regularly for various reasons but also for individual discs such as Rambo 4 where as dvdclones updates are more due to technical reasons. So this makes me think dvdclone is the better one since it does not need to keep releasing so many updates. "It's" software is capable of simply copying from one disc to another without any fuss whereas 1click must release updates to do a simple disc to disc copy.
So I'm asking why (besides for technical reasons such as improving burn engine, user interface etc) does 1click release/require so many updates. If I bought a dvd such as True lies I would think I would have more success with dvdclone since it can do the simple one to one copy whereas 1click must test the disc and release updates which makes me think 1click isn't all that great in the first place.
So guys please tell me why these 2 sofwares are very different when they are doing the same thing - as far as I know. Why does 1click require so many updates as dvdclone does not? Also could you recommend the best dvd copy software out there? Thanks.

It's not complicated. 1Click updates for new protections, the other does not. I still would not use it, however.

DVDFab or DVD Decrypter to rip.
    DVD Shrink to shrink.
ImgBurn to burn (integrated with DVD Shrink).

    Easy.

Because there are new copy protection measures released all the time. The copy removal software needs to be updated so it can defeat the newer forms of protection. If it didn't then it would have harder times to rip the newest movies - some would not be rippable at all without these systematic updates.

AnyDVD HD to break encryption. (can also be used to rip to the hard drive)

DVDShrink to examine the dvd to see how much compression is necessary. If only a trivial amount is necessary, I'll go ahead and use Shrink. I only make main movie backups...if I want to watch extras, I'll pull out the originals.

DVDRebuilder Pro for most backups, using either HC or Procoder as the encoder.

AnyDVD is updated very frequently, sometimes a couple of times a week, but at least 2-3 times a month

Not because its rubbish and full of bugs, but when new copy protections come out they release a new version to tak eteh new protections or new titles that won't copy with previous release

If you want to copy just DVD's, then AnyDVD will be fine. If you want to copy anything then invest in AnyDVD HD. It is vone of the very few pieces of software that will backup DVD, HD-DVD amd Blu-Ray, but obviously you then need a blu-ray ROM drive

To squash a DVD that is bigger than 4.3GB onto a single DVD, either remove junk you don't want or of you want top do a 100% copy then have a look at DVD-RB Pro. I've been using it for a looong time and nothing can get close as it basically takes the DVD apart and rebuilds it to match the best bitrate to fit on the DVD, which is why it takes much longer to complete compared to a lot of other software that justr removes things it hopes you won't notice, but you WILL get quality drop sthe more it has to do

If you want to squash a blu-ray onto DVD, then play it via a PS3 or some blu-ray players that can play them, have a look at DVD-BD, its still beta and takes a very very long time due to the sheer amount of work it has to do

AnyDVD is just for decryption/ripping the movie, so no, it doesn't burn anything. It is not an all in one program like DVDFab.

The first response in this thread mentions CloneDVD2. There's nothing really wrong with it, but I find DVDShrink to be just as good or better, and Shrink is free.

Edit: Just noticed that Videohelp has a direct link to the DVDShrink version that can use ImgBurn. That's a good option for people new to the process who want to burn automatically. So I've removed my earlier link.

Download the Imgburn enabled version of Shrink and you can shrink and burn in a single step. Not something I would recommend, but something a lot of people prefer to do. Personally, I like to test the output before committing it to a final burn.
