I have been seeing an ever-increasing amount of yelling in print peices (aka all caps).

I've found that YELLING in print always comes off as rude. People seem to have lost the fine art of finesse when writing.

Instead of "THIS IS A SHARED AREA. PLEASE CLEAN UP AFTER YOURSELF!!!", people should try "This is a shared area. Please clean up after yourself."

I guess it's not just the caps, but the inclusion of (usually multiple) exclamation points. Most of these signs or messages are meant to be seen by everyone, so adding the over-the-top emphasis just makes them look like jerks to most of the people reading it.

For example, say that there are cookie samples. I'll often see signs that say "TAKE ONLY ONE!!!", which simply looks rude, because the pigs are going to take what they want regardless of the sign. Same with the NO CUTTING IN LINE or NO SAVING SEATS signs. Or, mor on topic for this site, the DON'T STEAL! PSAs at the beginning of DVDs.

Now, on message boards, the finesse should be mostly the same, with slight variances.
Example 1: Swearing is okay, just NOT IN THE ******* TITLES.
Effect: Emphasis, with a humorous twist.

Example 2: I don't know what I'm doing? That not what YOUR MOM said!
effect: well, the writer is trying to be rude.

I just wish that there were more editors printing out the finals. Too many "monkeys on typwriters" printing out this drivel.

That reminds me of another on: Quotes do not equal emphasis. You can use them as they are meant to be used -
Quoting someone: He said, "I'm not hungry right now."

or when referring to something (usually sarcastically) as so-called,which amounts to a general quote -
    Here comes the "expert"

Most of the time when they're used for emphasis, the word does not even need emphasizing.
Example: Please have all guests wait in the "lobby"
What? Is there a broom closet that is referred to as "the lobby"? No, there is an actual lobby.
At a place I worked not too long ago, I would see printed signs that said "Please direct all questions about (certain subject) to the 'department head' ", as if it wasn't actually the Department Head (it was).

Anyway, I've ranted enough. I don't want to get to the point where I hit my CapsLock key

This was my biggest complaint at my last job -- any dipshit with a printer was allowed to create tacky-looking shit that was seen by our audiences (customers). And they wondered why people had a low opinion of the facility. Signage and disseminated information was supposed to come from our office, but the higher-ups were too stupid/lazy to enforce any of it. The result is chaos --- and lots of garbage stuck to the fronts of doors, windows, walls, etc.

My favorite signs were the ones from a color laser, green text on neon-yellow or neon-pink paper, to "get your attention". You couldn't read the thing without getting a headache. I also wonder how a person can possibly think 15 different fonts on the same page is helpful. And let's not forget underlining everything in bold in all caps, in 72pt font.

    I blame poor education.

The head of marketing for the last company I worked for said that the most fonts she would allow on a sign was three but she preferred to have no more than two.
She always came up with some great looking ads.

    @Supreme
I don't like it when someone posts in all caps either. The internet etiquette of all caps being shouting doesn't bother me. It's just to difficult to read. Gives me a headache.

No, it's off-topic. And not too much as it pertains directly to message boards.
