    Hi,

I've installed virtualdub 1.8.8 and the plugins pack so I can open FLVs and convert them to Divx.
I've also installed ffdshow rev. 3029 / 10-07-2009 and changed all disabled decoders to libavcodec.

Next I've opened the FLV (no problems there) and changed the decompressor to full processing mode, Divx. But when I save to avi I get

The decompression codec cannot decompress to an RGB format. This is very unusual. Check that any "Force YUY2" options are not enabled in the codec's properties
This forum suggests using a 1.6 version of virtualdub will solve it:

but I need 1.8 or later for FLV Input to work.

Another suggestion (link below) is to get the latest version of ffdshow and turn all decoders on, but I've already done this:

    Any other suggestions?

  2. Set ffdshow to ouput RGB.

Start -> All Programs -> ffdshow -> VFW Configuration -> Decoder tab -> Output (left pane) -> enable the RGB options in the right pane.

It it still doesn't work try disabling all the YUV output options. If it still doesn't work ffdshow isn't being used, some other VFW FLV decoder is.

    Hi Jagabo

    Still no joy.
I've tried outputting using the DivX codec and ffdshow (encoder set to xvid/divx) but the error still occurs.
I've turned of all YUV output options and changed the encoder setting to "force output colorspace: all RGB" to no avail.

Can you suggest how I can find out if ffdshow isn't being used an what else might be?

    Thanks

Interestingly I has TVersity codec pack installed. I uninstalled this then tried to load an FLV into VirtualDub and it said it doesn't find an appropriate codec. This would suggest VirtualDub was using a TVersity codec?

Anyway, I uninstalled ffdshow and reinstalled it configuring everything in VFW. The FLVs open again, but the RGB error still occurs

    Yes.

What codec is used in your FLV file? Older ones used FLV1. Newer ones use h.264. I think VP6 was in there somewhere too. Make sure all of those are enabled in ffdshow's VFW decoder section.

These seem to be VP6F. I've enabled everything - anything that was set to disabled is set to libavcodec. Still no joy.

I've resorted to using Free FLV Converter 6.5. It does the job, but I always prefer to use VirtualDub as it gives you full parameter control.

    Thanks for your help jagabo.

  7. It might be some codec issues with your system

As an alternative, you can try avidemux to encode flv=>xvid avi, which runs independent of system installed codecs & splitters

  8. Just to be sure, enable the VP6F decoder in both the VFW and DirectShow sections of ffdshow.

Its definately on in VFW, but what do you mean by the DirectShow section? "video decoder configuration"? If so, its on in there also.

I decided to uninstall any video editing/conversion software I had. I then reinstalled ffdshow to a different location and everything is now working as it should.
Thanks for all your help Jagabo

  11. Yes, Start -> All Programs -> ffdshow -> Video Decoder Configuration gets you to the Directshow settings. There are two main video handling libraries in Windows: VFW and DirectShow. Many editors use VFW (VirtualDub, for example). Most media players use DirectShow. Ffdshow has separate decoders for each.

I try to avoid installing and testing different video applications. Each application can install dozens of filters that are often incompatible with other applications.
