I downloaded a few movies that are 1280p and want to convert them to 720p so I can play them on my standalone DVD player hooked up to my tv, but I want to maintain the original aspect ratio. I never watch movies on my computer.

Is AutoGK capable of doing this? Also, is there other software that does this?

    1280p is probably not correct.

Normal resolution is square pixel 16:9 1280x720p. If so you already have 720p.

What is your DVD player? Most all won't play 720p unless BluRay or HD DVD.

  3. I think what you are saying is you want to reduce 1280x720 (720p) to something less than 720x480 (480p). I don't know if AutoGK can handle your source but something like Xvid4PSP or AviRecomp should work for you.

  4. If you want to play it as an AVI (XviD or DivX), then most likely, even if your standalone plays AVIs, it won't play 720p AVIs, as that's higher resolution than almost all of them support. When you say 720p, the 720 represents the height, and most won't support that. Most support widths of up to 720. If you're asking if AutoGK will convert 1280x720 AVIs to, say, 720x400, the answer's 'yes'. Set the width to 720 in the Advanced Settings and make sure to enable the ESS chipset option.

However, unless the source video is already an XviD or DivX AVI, AutoGK can't do the job as it doesn't support those. Most are MKV or MP4, maybe. Try Handbrake or XviD4PSP instead. If you don't know what you have (and apparently you don't), open it in GSpot or MediaInfo and post the information here.

Yes you are correct. I want to convert it so that instead of 1280, the max is 720, but I also want to keep the aspect ratio at 16:9, which is what it is at present. My player is a Sony. Can't give you a model number but the manual says it's capable of a maximum of 720x576.

Yes, you are also correct. I'm pretty green at all this video stuff. I want to convert the 1280 part to 720, yet still maintain the 16:9 aspect ratio.

    And thanks for the suggestions.

The source is an mkv file which I want to convert to and avi so that the maximum width is 720, but I want to maintain the 16:9 aspect ratio. BTW, gspot won't give you any useful info on mkv files.

    Mediainfo will.

Xvid4PSP should have no problems doing this. Assuming it is true 16:9, that is what you will get out the other end. If is has black bars in the source, Xvid4psp will remove them and encode accordingly.
