Ok I got my hands on the new comcast digital transport adapter since they are going all digital in my part of the metro detroit area. I got it hooked up and activated. Now my question:
For hooking up to a dvd recorder:
CAN YOU WATCH ONE CHANNEL WHILE RECORDING ANOTHER?
The reason I ask is I have never had a cable box until now. I do have the dual tuner cable dvr for high def and everything. But I still use an analog dvd recorder for other programming. Before I had the cable in to the dvd recorder in and it had the rf out so that the tv could still tune in channels while the dvd recorder was recording.
However this does not seem possible with this device. It has a remote that is used to change the channels. How does this work with a tuner in a dvd recorder?
I know how to connect it obviously. I just want to know if it can still allow me to record one channel and watch another through the tv at the same time.
Thanks for a question from a cable box newbie.
EDIt
It only has one rf out jack on the adapter unit. It has the cable in jack and a cable out jack and thats it.

Thanks stiltman.
I watched the 4 minute video.
It was decent enough.
However it still does not answer my question. My concern is that since the new adapter is a tuner itself that I would have to set the new adapter to the channel I want to record first and then record with the dvd recorder.
Is this true for these comcast digital adapters? Or will it pass the signal through so the dvd recorder will control it?
FYI the model number of my unit is dc50x. Thanks.Donatello - The Shredder? Michelangelo - Maybe all that hardware is for making coleslaw? -
Yeah, I meant the link as a joke since you said you already know how to hook it up
You have to consider that box the same as any DTV set top box. It decodes digital to analog. The reason you have to tune to channel 3 or 4 on the box and your TV.
Is your DVR tuner digital/QAM or analog?
If it's digital, just use a splitter befor the comcast box
If it's analog, get a second comcast box or get a new DVR
Edit, just read your first post all the way through
Since your DVR is analog, you'll need a second comcast box, but the tuner in the DVR is pretty much useless.
I would get a Digital/QAM DVR -
@stiltman - ah gotcha
Actually the converter isn't for the dvr. The dvr is the converter for my hdtv - it is connected via hdmi to my hdtv - the cable in goes directly to the dvr there.
My issue is on my older analog tv with the analog dvd recorder. I sent an email to comcast support. Seeing its the weekend I don't expect an answer until Monday or Tuesday.
Until then I will take some time experimenting to see what I can and can't do on my analog hookups.
thanks though for taking the time stiltman...
Edit - well I'm suprised - I actually got the response less than a half hour later. I just hadn't checked my email until now.
The tech responder said basically what I figured. It won't pass the signal on. Whatever it is set to will be displayed on the recorder. So it looks like I can only record the channel it is on and not do any pass through.
That's a shame.
I also think splitting the signal will not do any good either. My guess is it will only send the same signal out instead of a clean tunable signal.....
