Sign, I've gotten quite a headache and grief from this experiment. There has to be a simple and easy way out there and i can't find it.
I'm trying to encode theora video... by using the VFW ffdshow config. Its now working because Its not there (either not listed, disabled, or hidden) so i can't use it. So i thought i would grab the filters/
I went to xiph.org - the maintainer for theroa and found the direct show filters: http://www.theora.org/downloads/
Downloaded the filters, installed them, reboot... checked my VFW... nope, not there...![]()
Looked at the ffdshow release notes, it quotes "Theora (not for regular use, format specification hasn't stabilized yet)"
So i thought, maybe i'll update ffdshow... got the k-lite codec pack 5.0.0 - nope, didn't work.
So i thought, maybe i'll just update ffdshow with the latest build. 3 days old, no mention of allowing theora, just decoding it in the install. Ends up being the 'latest' build anyways.![]()
Is it possible to encode to theora? or do i have to continue to jimmy around with this CLI thusnelda version until the release is 'finallized' i don't care about quality (just YET) i just want to use the HTML 5 spec's video tag elements... what the duece? lol, im just trying to post a 'how to guide' and yet... im finding i need to find a guild for myself!!![]()
On top of that, the latest theora encode im using ffmepg2theora has bug where if the input framerate or something is too high, the video frame rate gets sped up. (for example a 10 second video becomes a 2 second theora clip, yet it has soemthing to do with the input framerate control of the source being 200 FPS, i dunno, can't figure it out even if i adjust the input FPS on the source video, or even the encoder... what the deuce!)![]()
HEEELLLPPPP!!! AAHHH!![]()

Have you checked doom9 forums? http://forum.doom9.org and search for theora and see if you can find some useful information.

ffdshow does not include a VFW Theora encoder. I didn't see any VFW encoders at http://www.theora.org.

HEY....
i think vlc DOES have an encoder.... i remember seeing something like that.
Let me tinker around... BOOM...(explosions!)... VLC encodes to theora...
WHOOAA
VLC doesn't convert it... but you can stream it to a file and it'll use LibTheora 3.2.1 so in effect, it does re-encode... also it doesn't give me the buggy framerate output i've gotten too. You have no idea how difficult that started out, and now it's just 'open - stream - file - go - done'
I had ALL sorts of bugs with the CLI version... -
I have ffdshow-tryout revision 3008,
and it says it can use libtheora for VfW encoding.
But I still think VP62 or XviD would be better choices.
P.S.: I've just encoded a 2-minute clip with VirtualDub,
and it worked. -
I remember using several aps to test with over the course of a week but found VLC the best...of course, things have changed since then...
too many chiefs and not enough indians... -
I was able to stream the clip to theora... but it wouldn't convert... maybe im an idiot.
Yup... I'm an idiot
I didn't realize after you select your source file... you have the option to convert it in a second window that pops up... Streaming worked just fine.
But when i open my newly created theora OGV/m video in vdubmod, it crashes... right after the open as if my input is corrupt (form VLC OR the CLI ffmeg2theora)
good god... i just want to add audio (vorbis) to this clip now without v dub mod.... any ideas for a muxer to use thats free, easy, and thats all it does?!
how is anyone supposed to post a video using HTML 5 if its this difficult... -

The irony of the situation was this was supposed to be a video clip with a 'how to guide' on creating and posting a video using HTML5...
Even now that I've completed my encoding... i can't post it on my blog because the service (blogger) won't let me upload/embed the file. It makes me use the flash player...
FAIL. -
I tried ffmeg2theora, too....couldn't think of it
imagine going thru all this to put a small docu-video on wikipedia...then having some self-appointed ******* come along and remove it...
