i have a complete VIDEO_TS folder structure from DVD on hard disk, and when i play folder in VLC it just starts playing a file, i do not get any menu options.
any idea where to start looking to see how to do this? or is it even possible?

You need to open the video_ts.ifo file. You can also try Media Player Classic or The KM Player.

It's a shame when something microsoft actually works better than other things
but windows media player seems to be the best option here.

If you say so, but I would use Media Player Classic myself

In VLC, use "Open Disc" and use the browse button under Disc Device to navigate to the folder on your hard drive. This will make VLC play the folder as a DVD rather than just a file and you should get the menus.
