I have Win XP and have been using DirectX 9.0c (Aug. 2004). I assume it has been updated via Windows Updates, but I don't know to what. My Dxdiag info says "DirectX 9.0c (4.09.0000.0904)" -- does this mean anything to anybody?

The "Old Versions" web site lists 5 newer "versions" spanning Dec. 2005 thru Feb. 2007 -- would installing the latest one, Feb. 2007, get me the most recent version for Win XP? Microsoft's web site is no help at all.

Yes, I saw that particular page, but I didn't understand what they meant by "web installer", or how it differed from the several other DirectX download files offered.

  4. it checks your installation of dx9 and if anything needs updating, then it downloads what is required and installs it.
