    Okay,

    Here we go again

The other day i was looking for some cheaper SATA burners and i could not find anything from pioneer for under $45.00.

Now i see newegg listed a new one for $30.99.

    Pioneer Black 22X DVD+R 8X DVD+RW 12X DVD+R DL 22X DVD-R 6X DVD-RW 12X DVD-RAM 40X CD-R 32X CD-RW 2MB Cache SATA CD/DVD Burner LabelFlash Support - OEM
    http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16827129045

    WTH is LabelFlash Support

    or these,

    LG Black 22X DVD+R 8X DVD+RW 22X DVD-R 16X DVD-ROM 48X CD-ROM 2MB Cache SATA DVD Burner - OEM
    http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16827136167

    SAMSUNG Black 22X DVD+R 8X DVD+RW 16X DVD-ROM 48X CD-ROM 2MB Cache SATA DVD Burner - OEM
    http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16827151187

The main thing i need is to be able to remove riplock for faster ripping & bitsetting on DVD+R & DL+R
It will be used for both movies and DL game backups.

    I'd prefer the pioneer.

Ya'all know who i'm waiting for on this one :P

The other one to consider is the Optiarc 7240s. Liggy over at cdfreaks has made a bitsetting firmware for it, and it is getting excellent user reviews. http://liggydee.cdfreaks.com/page/en/Optiarc-AD-7240S/

    In stock at mwave: http://www.mwave.com/mwave/skusearch_v3.asp?scriteria=AA75235

I believe label Flash is another version of Lightscribe technology.
Faster ripping then get the Samsung drive. I believe there's no 3rd party firmware just yet for the latest pioneer drives. Usually you can use MEDIA CODE SPEED EDIT for the pioneer drives but I'm not sure there's a firmware yet from ala42 who's the author of MCSE. LG drives have the read speed riplocked.

I also noticed that newegg doesn't have many dvd burners in stock for some reason. My last dvd burner purchase was the Pioneer sata 216 drive. Check out www.centralcomputers.com for a Pioneer 216/217 drive. I don't know how much shipping is though. I just have my cousin buy it for me from that website since they have stores in the San Francisco Bay area.

I'm a big LG fan. I would also never hesitate to buy a Pioneer either.
LG's do more "behind the scenes" weird stuff....stuff that most
    people don't care about.

    Santa Claus (??)

I can't provide an answer on the riplock question, but I'm pretty sure that Fry's has had Pioneer SATA -- and even a Plextor OEM SATA -- on sale for around that price point, fairly recently. Worth checking their ads each week, so long as you're not allergic to Fry's and if there happens to be one not too far away.
When in Las Vegas, don't miss the Pinball Hall of Fame Museum http://www.pinballmuseum.org/ -- with over 150 tables from 6+ decades of this quintessentially American art form.

Geeks.com has in stock the PIONEER 216 SATA drive for $25.99 but the color is beige. You could always spray paint it black if you needed to.

MEDIA CODE SPEED EDIT can be used on the 216 drive to enable faster read speeds and for bitsetting to dvdrom for DVD+R media.

I was thinking that also but then why not call it "lightscribe" ??

And they don't really say on the site and i'm not that interested to go looking at the pioneer site

Are those supposed to be faster even with the riplock disabled on the pioneers ??

Where do i get his firmwares ?
I remember doing a diff. pioneer back a year or so ago with MCSE, but i don't remember where i got the firmware to modify.
I have a lot of places bookmarked but don't see one for his stuff or any links on his site.
I already have the official firmware upgrade from the pioneer site for the DVR-216DBK.
    I suppose that would work.

For the life of me I can't remember how I got my 216 drive flashed using MCSE. It's been awhile now!

Okay I found the guide for Pioneer drives when using MCSE.
    http://club.cdfreaks.com/f7/pioneer-mcse-patching-238902/

Here's the MCSE website for pioneer drives.
    http://club.cdfreaks.com/f87/mediacodespeededit-support-pioneer-dvd-writers-153213/

The samsung drives can rip fast when using CoDeKing's hacked firmware. I haven't bought a Samsung drive in a long time with the last one being the S203B. I prefer the Pioneer drives for burning and ripping.

    Cool!!
    Thanks!!

Yeah i know, it's been quite awhile since i have used MCSE also.

But i did DL the updated firmware from pioneer and opened it okay in MCSE and changed some stuff but i'll have to wait till next week when i actually get the drive to try it

But i'm gonna scope out his firmware and probably use that to modify & use.
    I'll see what he has.

Alright, enough already, i am sold... i'm gonna get the pioneer :P

    Thanks again!!

Like what kind of weird stuff ?

Because i love to make hardware and software do things it is not supposed to do or when they say it can't do that 8)

I have had LG's also over the years at diff. times, but i just have a hardon for pioneer... have for like 20 years... like no one can tell from my avatar
We wont go into the monkeys that PM me telling me how my avatar is so annoying to them... like i care

And whats up with your avatar ??

I noticed you have not had one for some time now.....

LG's can read and burn oversized CDs correctly. An 800MB CD reads as 800MB available
to burn...no need for overburning nonsense.
They can also do CD Text....BUT....we all know how few players
    support that now don't we.
At least Pioneer (in the past) was nice enough to prominently display
the fact that their drive(s) does not support oversized media in the specs
    for their drives....that was nice.

Burning software is also/however a factor with oversized media and CD text too though.

Gotta find my old avatar. It may still be on my old computer.
That one freaked people out too for some reason.
