They have not been sold new for many years, eBay is indeed the the best source for second-hand VCRs. Because JVC fans are very picky about certain models, the 9500 is the most sought-after and thus hardest to find and most expensive when you do. The difference in performance between the 9500 and some other, more easily found models is very small: if you're doing transfers professionally, like LordSmurf, you may prefer the 9500 but it isn't the be-all and end-all. A JVC 9911 is more easily found, and a recent JVC DVHS like the SR-VD400U would likely be newer and in better condition. All have the filters and stabilizers used in the 9500, the primary advantage of the 9500 is that it was a top-of-the-line model back in the days when that really meant something: its built very well, because it was very expensive new. Later models aren't as "nice" but will effectively provide 95% of the performance. Shop carefully, and only buy if you get a return/refund guarantee from the seller.
