  1. My DVD drive is an 8x, yet I consistantly rip at around 2.2x . It did this under Win98, and now under WinXP. I do have DMA enabled on the drive. It's a Raite DVD drive, I think the model is 108H or something like that (I'm at work so can't confirm). It's a slave drive, my 24x/4x HP writer is the master (IDE) and both have DMA enabled. I also have the latest WinXP ASPI installed. I'm wondering now if brand matters much. But then, how can they rate it as 8x if it doesn't read at 8x? Or is ripping always done at a much lower speed then regular reading?

  2. A drive can't necessarily rip at the same speed it can read a dvd. (and the maximum read speed is only acheived at the outer edge of the disc). Considering that you have a relatively unknown brand of dvd-rom and it's 8x, I think that 2.2x ripping is reasonable. You could always try a firmware upgrade, but you aren't likely to get a whole lot faster ripping, especially considering that DMA already enabled (a major speed factor in my experience).
