I have a mac and have been using ffmpegx which is a great piece of software, but i'm buying a PC soon and want another great convering application.

    Some features i'm expecting:

    -Excellent quality convertions,
    -Crop tool,
-Handles all files (avi, mpg ect..)
-Mux tool for subs & audio
    -Fast Conversions
-Re-encode Tool (Used D-Vison on Mac)

freeware would be nice but i don't mind paying for better equipment.

I think all of these applications are used on PCs (with windows).

are these the best applications out?
Don't know if these are the best, but I'm using almost the same list for my needs as stated above.

I've only managed to use Xvid4psp, avidemux as the rest of the applications download links are not working on any site on the internet but my friends can download them fine on their computers (weird).

Anyway i can't workout how to change the bitrate for the audio & video for both these progarams and for avidemux i can't even figure out how to encode/convert the file i used the save as option but that just creates a blank document.

In xvid4psp click on the E-icon next to the Video Encoding to change settings like bitrate.

And avidemux may be a bit buggy for some video sources. Save should start the encoding.

Did you try download from both the authors site and our mirror downloads(direct link)?

Yes i tried from the authors site and other mirrors on google.
I managed to encode some files last night but hit some problems:

    - On avidemux when i edit than encode a file the audio is all over the place and very out of sync.

    - Xvid4psp i tried ripping some files but they didn't play on my divX dvd player, says the GMC not supported (I think its because the quality is too high and i think i ripped it on the lowest quality setting for a xvid on the encoding options (Xvid Ulta).

    - Can someone tell me how to edit files on Xvid4psp

    Solutions Please?

In avidemux set the audio option as "copy" and try the conversion like that.
In Xvid4psp use the option for format "Avi Hardware" for most compatibility with a standalone DVD Divx players.
For editing I'd use avidemux rather than xvid4psp.

Avidemux can't sync wmv files at all, i have read post on other forums and there isn't a solution for it.
So is there another wmv editor that is a simple to use as avidemux that can edit wmv files without problems. I've tried eveything on this list and they were no good, and the virtuldubmod & virtualdub-mpeg-2 don't support the wmv files because of complaints by microsoft.

Try VirtualDub with the wmv plugin.

Or you could use an Avisynth script (with DirectShowSource to load your wmv file) and open the script in VirtualDub.

Virtualdub's plugin for wmv's was banned as requested by microsoft.
Avisynth lookes way too complicated, i guess i will just have to encode the files to avi first then edit them using, avidemux.
Also is anyone else having problems with xvid4psp, i have had to use the old versions to get it to work, the newer versions crash all the time while encoding and sometimes this message appears xvid_encraw.exe applicatin stopped working, it seem other people are having the same problem but i read through all the posts and i couldn't solve it.
The old version also crashes when encodinh MKV files at the MP3 conversion stage, very strange. On Apple Mac computers we were not blessed with as many applications as PC users but the software that was out was high quality. FFmpegX converted all files to almost any output. SimpleMovieX that was the best editing software i've come across, but avidemux comes close.
Thats the only two applications i needed for editing & encoding now i have 2 or 3 of each.......... amyway i just find it strange as i always imagined that mac users where missing out.

The same here. Nowadays, I use xvid4psp less and less, because it often crashes.
    I just use other software.

    When did that happen?
Are you talking about fccHandler's plugin, still available from this page?

I've tried that plugin. I put the wmv plugin into a newly created plugin32 folder (or whatever the folders called that i'm told to create) in the Virualdub folder but still it didn't work. I can't be doing anything wrong, maybe it doesn't work for vista.

I converted a wmv file with a old version of Xvid4psp and the file converted without a problem, but when i edited that file in avidemux and saved as or converted the file the framerate increases the the file is like its in fast forward, i changed the framerate to pal 25.00 but its still in fast forward i even custom set it to 10 but no luck there. i guess i can live without editing wmv files.

I know virtualdub 1.3c was at one point the last version to offer WMV support, but I thought the latest versions have reintroduced it ?
    If in doubt, Google it.

virtualdub 1.3c loaded the wmv files only to come up with a error message saying that it could not locate compressor for WMV2
