    Hi,

Can anyone tell me the best way to trim a video (mostly divx) in OSX without reencoding? preferably a freeware solution!

I want to be able to cut out scenes from movies

    i use this one constantly, . . .
i capture with Hauppauge HD-PVR, repackage from TS container to mp4 container with FFMpeg, transfer to my MBP, and edit in StreamClip and then just hit the save button, no reencoding, multip GB clips take anywhere from seconds to save to about a minute or two - this is with SD and HD [1080(i and p) & 720p]

    Thanks

Avidemux and MPEG Streamclip are both freeware and support DivX for lossless editing. Both have their pros and cons (depending on the source format as well).

MPEG Streamclip offers scrollwheel support for cueing and the use of your keyboard for setting MARK IN/OUT, thus a much faster workflow. It doesn't show you if your markers hit an I-Frame or whatever. So it's not really made for precise editing.

Avidemux gives you such a frame control. And additionally offers "Smart Encode". In other words it just re-encodes that short bit from between two I-Frames, something you'd most likely won't realize later. It handles most AVI types really well. Last time i checked the MP4 container on the Mac version was broken though. Thus i had to save H.264 to the AVI container as well. The Qt4 GUI looked like the best choice for me BTW.

Strictly speaking, that's true. However, Streamclip does allow you to advance to the next keyframe, so you can control your edits to occur at keyframe boundaries.

Oh! Thanks for the heads-up. *CMD + K* indeed makes MPEG Streamclip jump to the closest keyframe! Had forgotten about that.
