  1. Hi,

I'm looking for a better-quality standalone DVD player that can play CD-R/VCD/SVCD and possibly XVCD in both PAL/NTSC.

Aside from some Apex/Mintek models (I'm not fond of their build quality, I recently bought an Apex 500WM that started having problems after 2 days), what else should I be looking at?

I wanted to try the RCA 5240P, but then some people told me that it doesn't play PAL VCDs. I have many VCDs from various regions of Asia, and they're all PAL.

Will a Sony changer DVP-NC600 play PAL VCDs?

    Thank you very much. 8)

  2. I forgot to mention that I did look at the DVD Players Compatibility list at:

    http://www.vcdhelp.com/dvdplayers.php

but it doesn't mention the PAL/NTSC thing.....only whether it's capable of playing VCD/SVCD/XVCD or not.

I had a major problem with it, but that was just a chip-update problem.
    It works great now!

In sweden, you can buy it at Clas Ohlson. 2490,- SEK.

  5. My first suggesttion would be the RCA 6001P, IF you can find it, but you will probably be out of luck on the PAL issue as far as its concern.

Then I would default to my GE 1101P or 5803P, which will do all formats listed. Also, with easy FREE downloadable firmware patch, you can add optioons for PAL/NTSC switching, disabling macrovision, & add the miniDVD option. $120 (1101p) online at Wal-mart, and their stores price match to online price. Only drawback, does not have the "progressive scan" option that the RCA does.
