  1. Compusa has a special on a 80GB "Compusa brand by Maxtor" at 5400 RPM...$99

any other deals around??? and does 5400 vs. 7200 RPM ... really make a differents???

I'm thinking that if it does I'll use my old 60GB 7200RPM ATA100 to rip and convert then store it (transfer) to the 80GB slower drive.

Slower drives tended to be a bit louder. But it's not bad at all.

I remember when I shelled out $150 for a 10GB hard drive 4 years ago. Or when an 80MB hard drive used to cost $2,000 back in late 80's when Macs were the only computer shipping with hard drive as standard and not an option.

5400rpm? no problem! it may not be the best for video capture, but it sure does provide a lot of storage for $99! i'm sure if u picked up two of them, they'd work real well for capture using the fastrack raid controller card.

  4. One other thing you can look at is if the drive and your motherboard are certified for ATA/66 of ATA/100. if they are make sure to get an 80 pin ide cable instead of the 40 pin one and you'll get better results with the drive.

    BTW if you didn't know

    ATA/66 and 100 means they can through put of 66 mb/sec and 100 mb/sec.

without the cable it revierts to 33 mb/sec.

but the 7200 drives are faster then the 5400 so if you combine this with ata/100 you get a really fast drive.

you can get a 7200 60 gb drive for $98.00 if you look for it. Look http://shop.store.yahoo.com/nexthardwareshope/index.html

This is where I got my 60gb and it runs really well. They have a 80gb 5400 for $106 and you don't have to wait for any rebates which most of the time you do with comp usa.

    hope this helps.
