I got a raw DV file from a DV Camcorder to iMovie capture on my Vista PC. VLC reads it, Quicktime does, but nothing else (even gspot seemed confused). So I got MPEG Streamclip to convert it to DV-AVI. My understanding is that that should be the same stream but in an AVI container and everything reads it. Since this is taking a while I was wondering whether MPEG Streamclip is actually decoding/reencoding it rather than just adding the container and whether there is a way to just add the container. From the samples I made it seems like there is no discernible quality loss (the source material is a semi professional camcorder but in bad light conditions so it's so so).

Also as a side question, MPEG Streamclip multipass H.264 encode seems to nevber terminate. I let it run all night and it was just starting pass after pass. How many passes does it usually do? And is it worth the quality increase for a source like this?

Thank you
