    I have a Canon HG20 camcorder that produces files of time .m2ts.

    I would like to be able to create a standard DVD (non - blue ray). Are there any programs that can do this automatically. I purchased Nero 9 but no luck.

    you could try dvdflick, it was just updated. there are other free programs like it in the tools section. convertxtodvd is not free but works ok.
