Alright so I was inspired by Moxiecat's excellent post with his various video clips that I thought I'd try this. Below are seven video clips of the same 16 sec video clip. The VCRs were a JVC HR-S7600U SVHS VCR (my main VCR), a Toshiba M684, and a cheap Panasonic PV-V4524S. My workflow for each setup was:

VCR --> AV toolbox AVT-8710 TBC --> Pioneer DVR-340H DVD Recorder.

Without further ado, the video clips. Which one(s) do you think look best? AND WHY? To my eye, the JVC on AUTO or SOFT look best (the R3 option didn't seem to add any sharpness or noise, either way). The Toshiba looked a little gritty and harsh.

I'll have to author all of these to a disc, for a good comparison.

  5. The Panasonic clip had terrible time base problems. A crop from the Panasonic on the left, one of the JVC caps on the right:

WOW! Great eyes jagabo! You are right, the JVC keeps those lines straight with its nice built-in TBC.
