    Hey all,

I normally use the Divx Converter to convert DVDs to AVIs so I can make complication discs. I'm trying to convert a movie (the original Music Man) and keep getting an Unknown Error 5090.

Looks like a lot of issue with this error online but no definitive answer. I can copy the files down to my HDD just fine but when I convert, it gets around 30% done and then crashes. I've never had this error before and can't find a solution.

Anyone know a way to solve this issue?

Otherwise I'll have to try some other program to do the conversion I guess...

At the DivX forums, we see this thing asked exhaustively, so the response is automatic: "Use another tool".

Amazingly, it seems DivX Converter has some sort of expiry date. It simply stops working. Period. Then it's time to "use another tool".

Nope. Nobody knows and we stopped caring why a long time ago since we too never got an answer. And you bet there's alot of threads about it in that it stops working - because it doesn't work. We simply just have learned to accept this about DivX Converter and tell people to "use another tool".

It's not a guess. "Use another tool."

Seriously, sarcasm aside, I do believe in the concept DivX tried to implement with DivX Converter - drop and encode, simple and sweet, but unfortunately the execution was poor. I'm not the lone Mod there in their forums that believes it's rather incomplete and very buggy. We actually call it a "toy". So we gave up on it.

Here's a thread describing the sarcasm (the forum lost the avatars for now, I'm posts 2 and 4 here).

There are stickies at the DivX forums dedicated to the eccentricities of the Converter, but when you're ready to "use another tool", here's a good stickie:

They even mentioned in there that there will be no help from us if Converter doesn't work for you.

    Hi,
You may be able to solve the DivX converter's error 5090!!!!!

For me this error apparently has something to do with the System Audio Codec.

    About me:
I have a Core2Quad 2.333GHz intel, 4GB DDR2 RAM, 512MB nVidia video card RAM, 1.5TB HHD and I'm using DivX converter frequently (almost every 3 days, 'cos I record and convert DVB programs).

This error may occurs to me usually after installing a codec pack update which makes me think that DivX converter depends on the installed system codecs - (It should give us the choice weather to use System Codecs or its Internal Codec which DivX converter seems not to have them independently) - and the codecs merits (priorities).
However, whenever I start getting this error I start fixing the problem by doing all or some of the following steps:

First, I run a codec management utility (i.e Filter manager) and i check:
    1. if AC3Filter is uninstalled then i reinstall it.
    2. if AC3Filter is installed then i check if it has been disabled then i re-enable it.
    3. if AC3Filter is installed and enabled then i change its merit to a higher value or the highest (make it the system default)
    4. Run AC3Filter configuration utility and go to the System Tab and chick all the audio formats to be AC3Filter managed and make it your system's preferred audio filter.
    5. If the error still exist then do this: (I usually install K-Lite mega codec pack)
    (a) Run your codec configuration manager and reset the codec settings to (Default or Recommended)
    6. If the error still exist then do this: (I usually install K-Lite mega codec pack)
    (a) Un-install K-Lite mega codec or whatever codec pack you have.
    (b) Re-install K-Lite mega codec or whatever codec pack you have (and make sure to install and enable the AC3Filter Audio Codec) and use recommended settings ---> now go through steps (2 to 4) to check
    7. If the error still exist then try to uninstall the DivX bundle itself and the codec pack then reinstall the codec pack first then the DivX bundle.
    8. If the error still exist then go through steps (2-4) again

as you may see....... IT'S A WAR ........ YES A WAR between me and this DivX converter and the system codecs ...... I must get it to work. I have no other choice. And I always win.

I still use DivX converter and that error may start occurring usually after installing a new version of my codec pack but I always get it to work again after a war between me and the installed codecs and filters.

I hope this may help you solving the problem.

Well, isn't this (questionable) post out of date?

DivX Converter is something totally different now, with a newer codec, etc - none of this really applies today. Read the date - it's almost two years since any of us posted in this thread. Even the links no longer work as DivX has shut down the forums (hopefully for reconstructing them soon) since.
