HELP - no sound from avi's and mpegs

First off, i need to apologize for such a basic question, but, This is desparation, I have spent the last three days trying everything 30 years of computing has taught me. I started having trouble with sound from a Hauppauge hvr-1600 tv card, it was intermittently good and sometimes stuttered. anyway that was early on in this problem. now i am at the point where i get no sound from avi's or mpegs when using wmp 12. wmv are fine. if i use gom player they all work. the reason for wmv support is that i have traced the hvr-1600 sound problem to the fact that they use the equivalent of mpeg for sound. if i record a video and play it back using wmv no sound, gom works fine. it appears to me that the mpeg-1 layer codec is the culprit but i can't figure out which codec that is, i have used gspot, avitoolbox, mediainfo, avicodec none show a codec for mpeg1 layer 2. i know i am missing something really simple and stupid but i am the point of not being able to see the forest throught the trees. I will happily post any info the is needed. thanks in advance for any help.

mpeg1 layer 2 should work in wmp without installing any codec.

Are you using windows 7 or vista?

Or you could use ffdshow and enable it as mpeg1 layer2 decoder in the audio decoder settings.

ok, tried to fiddle with ffdshow, not sure i know enough to use it properly, but no change in any event.
