Vista compatible mp3 editor which will save clips at 48kbps

Hi, hope someone here can help:

I need to make some 20 second mp3 clips from some three minute songs which I can fade in and out on the ends and I need to save them at 48kbps. I used to use GoldWave for this but GW won't work with my new Vista tower (had XP before) and any I look at now are either not Vista compatible or won't go any lower than 64kbps.

I tried Adobe Audition 3 but I can't get it to load unless I disable all my other software first and I'm not doing that.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated on what will do this for me on Vista, thanks in advance for the replies.

soundforge will go down to 20kbps if you want to have it at 8khtz.

Goldwave still works with vista and encodes all the way down to 8khz at 8kbps.

Audacity can do it with the proper LAME components installed, too, I believe.

I hope so, I just spent this kind of $ on Audition and I don't want to spend it again to then find out the same thing happens with this. I'll let you know how I get on with it in any case.

When I reinstalled GoldWave my screen goes all squiggly, if you know how to fix this...

Never had my screen going squiggly,might be your screen resolution isnt set right.

Lots of apps will use your desktop resolution,maybe goldwave is trying to use the best resolution that is set by windows but your monitor cant handle that setting.

OK, so I need to ask something here and I swear I'm not trying to be difficult, being an admitted newbie at this tech stuff I'm just trying to learn how to resolve this

The minute I reinstall GW, my screen squiggles, so how do I reinstall quickly enough to get in there and change the settings before it squiggles?

I don't have an answer but a suggestion. Change the video to 640 x 480 and lowest setting to see if you can read it then.

Make sure your monitor settings is set to use your monitor highest resolution,if your monitor only goes up to 1024x768 and windows thinks it goes to 1280x1024 then it will go to 1280x1024 which your monitor cant handle hence the squiggly lines.

You have to change the monitor settings in windows so it will match your monitors highest resolution and refresh rate,in other words download your monitor driver and install it.
