every time I click a video file to play, only Windowmedia or Nero are shown as opiton. If I want to play VLC, I have to start it first and then open file to choose the video file. Never have this problem with XP. Can s.o. know how to resolve this problem? Thank you.

    OK, on Vista Ultimate.

"Right click"... "Open with" ... then "Choose default program"

VLC should be one of the choices if installed.

If you want VLC to be the default, check the box.

I already tried all, still can't geit it. the VLC does work on my Vista ultimate but it just can't be the default player. even when I maually put it on the list of sofware, it still can't get on the list. don't know why.

  7. You need to go into the default programs in the control panel and make VLC the default player for whatever file extension you are trying to play.

When you install VLC, it asks if you want to 'associate' files with it. Click that box and VLC will show up in your context menus as a choice. It works fine with Vista Ultimate on two installations I have. Just un-install and re-install and choose that option and it should work. I would also select not to use the existing settings, just redo your preferences after installing.

Install VLC? I download a zip file, then unzip it, and it works but it is not working as a default player.

I got in the official site and downloaded again. I chose the first link with 15.9mb and had no problem.
If I chose the third link with 26mb, it did not work with my vista ultimate.
can't explain why, but the problem is solved.
