RCA Indoor Amplified TV Antenna from Walmart looks pretty good anybody elese use is this antenna for DTV how well do it work
-
Go to http://www.tvfool.com/index.php?option=com_wrapper&Itemid=29 and put in your GF's address, and the approximate height at which the antenna will sit. That produces a report of the channels available to her. The channels in the green area are the ones that she is most likely to get indoors. She may also get some of the ones in the yellow area at times.
Look at the "Real Channel" column. If any channels listed are numbered 13 or lower, she needs a VHF and UHF antenna. If none are, a UHF only antenna will work. Look at the "Dist Miles" column. If she is within than 10 miles of most of the channels she wants to watch, an unamplified antenna may work well. Otherwise, look for an one that amplifies.
Beyond that, finding the right indoor antenna is more of a trial-and-error process than anything else. If you look at ratings, one man's perfect match is another one's reject. Be sure to use a store with a good return policy in case she does not like what you buy.
I have the Terk TV-4, which I ordered online from Radio Shack. I live close to most of the stations I want to watch and I need to have both UHF and VHF. It does the job for me. -

Note that the TVFool plot will also show compass directions to the transmitters. If they are in different directions but close, you can use an omnidirectional antenna. If they are farther away you will need a directional antenna and point at the station you want to receive. Some tuners allow adding scanned channels. Others force one to rescan every time you point the antenna.

I tried most of the amplified antennas and took them all back. For $25.00 I bought a HDTV outdoor antenna. I mounted it on an old DirectTV bracket. I now have excellent signal strenght on all my channels!

Another resource to see what channels are possible with what type of antenna is

Spend real money, about $100 & mount on the roof & you won't be sorry.

You can build this antenna for a lot less than $25 and it works better than most indoor antennas.

This is only a UHF antenna but I am able to pick up all the stations in the Phoenix area (26 channels) except for FOX channel 10 and that is because FOX is broadcasting at half power until the end of August. 03.1, 05.1, 05.2, 08.1, 08.2, 08.3, 08.4, 12.1, and 12.2 all come in great as do all the UHF channels.
I live 23 miles from the antenna towers. -

I remember reading about some guy testing these...He gave up and disconnected his antenna leaving just a wire. Weeks later, he came back to discover the dangling wire picked up reception better than any antenna he had tested...ha ha.
That DIY antenna site is where I read the above story.
