  1. I had a 20 minute TV program that I wanted subtitles, but none were on the net, so I made my own. It took several hours to type the subtitles, but the worst part was getting the timing right. I used DivXLand Media Subtitler because I thought it would be easy. You just play the video and press and hold down the mouse when you want to set the subtitle, then release the mouse when you want the subtitle to disappear. Sounds easy but in fact it is not, due to many problems such as delay due to hearing reaction time, inability to hear clearly some of the dialogue, additional problems with rapidfire speech, mistakenly pressing the mouse twice, etc.
So I am curious, how do the professionals add subtitles? It seems that if you have a jog wheel and and play the video at slow speed or even slow reverse (with audio), this would be a great help to accurately set the precise beginning and end of each subtitle.
In my case, after using DivXLand Media Subtitler, I had to advance all the subtitles by 0.3 second (to make up for hearing reaction time), and then I had to go into the srt file and tweak many of the subtitles timing to get good timing. It was a lot of work. I couldn't imagine doing a whole movie this way. I imagine that there are large numbers of people in Hong Kong that do nothing all day but add subtitles to movies.

Well pro's can use what they like but I prefer visualsubsync as I can do 1 hour video subs in about 2.5x the play time... you get pretty good at it with a lot of practice and good hearing.

I even subtitled a title for a friend ... the thing was in swedish language, lol, what fun that was when I speak english.

Sometimes the area time to be subtitled isn't long enough so you need to make adjustments or leave it out.

Visualsubsync has a loopback feature in which it can repeat a specified area between two markers to help with adjustments of timing.
