  1. I'm getting this message in VirtualDub sometimes:
'Video codec "Panasonic DV CODEC" is claiming to be able to decompress formats that it does not actually support. This can cause the Windows video codec system to malfunction and may cause applications to crash. Please remove the errant codec or replace it with an updated version from the original vendor.'

But how exactly do I remove it please, as it doesn't appear in Add/Remove Programs?

I've downloaded a new file, Panasonic_DV_codec_v2.64.exe. I could just try installing it anyway, but I'd be happier to uninstall the misbehaving one first.

Also, is there a definitive test to see that this codec is working properly please? A link to download a suitable file perhaps?

How to uninstall the Panasonic DV Codec
Go to the Control Panel, go to Sound and Audio Devices, go to Hardware, scroll down to Video Codecs, click Properties and select the pdvcodec.dll and click Remove.
That's an old VFW DV codec, Cedocida is better.

  3. Thanks Safesurfer. Moments ago found an old thread with same advice and have duly installed it. Hopefully thius by-passes the question of how to uninstall the Panasonic thing, as Cedocida should replace it I gather. But I'm curious to know how I would do that anyway?

No, it won't replace it, the Panasonic will still be there. The Merit of a codec determines whether it is the preferred codec or not. I would go ahead and remove the Panasonic one.

    open command prompt, type:
    Code:
    regsvr32 /u pdvcodec.dll
    hit enter

you may need to add path to the dll in some cases, then you'd type (for example)
    regsrv32 /u C:\Windows\system32\pdvcodec.dll
    or
    regsrv32 /u "D:\Program Files\Panasonic Old Crap Files\pdvcodec.dll"
I guess you've got it by now
