Back to Schizzzon,
Win 98 and ME do not support multiple processors.
You need an NT based OS ( ie NT 4, 2K, or XP ).~~~Spidey~~~

i know ur right, i just talked to a pc store, damnit!! lol
They also told me that both 98 and me cant read ram over 384mb
Well they can read it but cant use it past that, ahhhh!!!
so now im gettin me an xp2000, still good
gettin that, asus mother, 512 mb ddrram with $72 fan for $425 i think its good
Supports up to 4 gb ddrram(which i will never use), 1 agp and 6 pciShiZZZoN PzN
Everyday is another payday and I am one step closer to becoming the one. -

Because this is a RAID MOBO, to get the most out of the performance of the system, you at least need to get a second ATA100 hard disk that matches the first unit you have. Also, you should have a completley different boot disk that contains your OS. This is the only reason I mentioned the need to get a new hard disk.

XP2000+ can do SMP but they r not optimized 4 it like the MP Athlon processors yet they do just as good of a job but I have never tried personaly myself this is what I have been told on several hardware sites.
Who ever told u win9x/me cannot utilize more then 384 megs of ram is wrong. WinME/9x is not capable of using more then 512 megs of ram and will have errors if it detects more ram then 512... Bsod, lockup, memory errors ect.... The only way 2 fix this would b 2 adjust the VCatch 2 ignore the xtra ram but u will still b limited 2 512.
I use up all 512 megs of ram when I do Video Editing so that tells u it will utilize all of it.

One thing though if yer going dual, make sure you get a good quality psu, at least 400 watt.

If it's true that you can use AMD XP processors in dual cpu systems then I would love to find out how it's done. IF you can give me any information on where to look then I would be more than happy. Thank you.

For best results (particularly in TMPGenc which supports multi-threading) you're gonna want a DUAL Athlon (I'm saving $ for mine).
Intel just stated that they will NEVER produce a consumer level dual P4. The only multi-processor systems will work only with the P4-Xeon -> at about $1200 per processor. No thanks. -
Menace :
How is your system going ?
I`ve literally just upgraded my PC ( yesterday ) :
KR7A-133Raid ( Not using Raid, using IDE 1+2 @ ATA100 )
Athlon XP 1700+ & 2.2Ghz Heatsink + Fan
256Mb DDR
ATI All-In-Wonder 128 Pro
MMC 7.1
DirectX 8.0a + Video Capture Update
Win 98 SE
What temp does your processor run at when Idle / Loaded ?
Are there any probs you have come across yet ?

There are two versions of the Abit KR7A.
One is RAID, one is not. Model # for the RAID version is KR7A-RAID, and it costs more, so you probably didn't buy that one by accident. -

One note about mobos with the KT133 chipset - that chipset has problems with busmastering on the PCI bus. Your system can lock up on you tighter than if you ate 5 pounds of cheeseThe KT133a chipset has addressed the problem and busmastering works fine.
"Why would anyone care about this?" you ask. People with hardware capture cards such as the Dazzle DVC II would! These cards busmaster the PCI bus, and chipsets that do not busmaster correctly cause them to lock up.

If you want more info on dual systems, go to 2cpu.com. After i got my system people were telling me that there single cpu systems were just as quick, so i did some test of my own. i downloaded the sample movie clip from the tmpge site. My system with high quality vcd settings encoded the 1 minute clip in 25 seconds.I did the same thing on my freinds p4 1.8 and it took 47 seconds, next i did it with my system running only one cpu and comleted it in 37 seconds. So don't let the p4 people tell you that sse2 instruction makes a big difference, and yes the p4's are definitely slower.

I have a 40Gb ATA 100 drive 512 SDRAM (pc133) ATA 33 CDromsso unless i start replacing all the slow components I will never get the speed of some of the pricier performance boards. I did stay with the AMD 1700+ however. My idea is that when it comes time to get a new PC I'm selling the whole rig and buying a WHOLE new one--I hate buying a part here and a part there.
That said, the temps are cpu 47-50 degrees C and the case temp 31-35 degrees C. I hope you got a good fan and heat sink on that AMD--those suckers get HOT!! I just bought a case fan though because by ATI 64MB VIVO hates even that low of heat and buggers out on me. Whatever you do don't go direct x 8.1--I did that and everyhting started crapping out on me--it was much more stable at 8.0 (win98 SE as well). -
Tell me about the chip getting hot
!!!! LOL !
I used to have an Athlon 1Ghz and a standard HSF ( CoolerMaster )
That used to sit at around 48-52Deg. I never had any case fans appart from a 5.25" PC Cooler ( 2 small fan thingy ).
Now with the XP 1700+, I have a CoolerMaster 2.2Ghz HSF. I also got a PCI Blower and mounted it directly under my graphics card heatsink and chips.
The temp of my XP is now around 51-56Deg and Case 29-31Deg.
I`ve ordered 2 Sunon 80mm Case fans to try to get some airflow around the case.
Does anyone have any reccomendations of any good HSF`s ?
Was looking at a ThermalTake Orb or replasing the CoolerMaster`s 60mm 27cfm fan with a Sunon 80mm 39cfm Fan.
Can anyone give any recomendations ?
Temperature is important, but so is noise as i often leave the PC on over night in my room encoding.

Wow, it's been awhile since I last visited this site.
Anyways, I upgraded my system to a P4 1.6a Northwood last month. I upgraded from an AMD Tbird 700. This is my first Intel system and I'm more than happy.
For those of you that have been out of the loop, Northwoods are beasts at overclocking (if you're into o/cing..). On a 1.6A, you pretty much can get 2.133ghz right out of the box with retail heatsink and fan. There have been many people that hit 2.4 and up even with retail heatsink/fan. I've only been able to get 2.2ghz and keep stable.
My next system after this will probably be another AMD system though. Although Intel has really impressed me with the Northwood, Amd's roadmap just looks too impressive. -
While it seems to be trendy to 'bash' Intel, I'm quite happy to use Intel products because of one key feature. STABILITY.
I've been building PCs since the XT, (although using them even longer) and the Intel is a far more superior product when product stability is looked at.
Aside from the fact that AMD is now using the silly system of selling their CPUs by model instead of MHz, the bottom line is that they are not a stable product when used at the level people 'brag' about in regard to the chip being faster than the Intel. I've had nothing but trouble from AMD cpus.
I beta test OS and game titles for Microsoft, and having used both CPU based systems, I can say for a fact that the AMD systems generate FAR more errors than the Intel systems do. I've had had people who had problems with a particular program, and when I took that program and found a duplicate system with the Intel CPU the program would work FINE.
My current specs (home PC):
1.8GHz P4 on an ABit TH7-II
512M RDRAM (800MHz)
Dual 60GIG 7200RPM Western Digital Caviar drives
ATI AIW Radeon (32M)
Enermax 430W dual fan PS
Pioneer DVR-A03
Lian-Li PC68 case
I know my system isn't 'top of the line', but I would sooner take the stability of the Intel CPU and chipset over the alternatives. If you want to eek out a few more clock cycles, sure go for the AMD, but you get what you pay for.
Regards,
Savant -
In all fairness, AMD makes perfectly stable cpus. Their only problem is the heating issue. Most stability problems for AMD users are most certainly user related.
I've been on both sides of this battle (AMD vs. Intel), and I have to say that they are both very equal in the stability area. You just got to know your own hardware. Make sure you have a good power supply, a good heatsink/fan, and plenty of room for air to circulate in your tower. There are plenty of other variables too (memory, motherboard, etc.) but these are the main issues.
Also, people talk about the price issue too much now also. The gap isn't all that big now folks. -
pretty good make believe system......when they come out with 1.6 nborthwoods, wake me up..

AMD's overclock better than Intel processors. When I boot my system, my MB reads "1900+". Because I'm getting a boost of my PCI bus frequency, my I/O will be faster than the standard non-overclocked 1900+. Calculations- Standard PCI: 133 FSB / 4 = 33MHz. Overclocked PCI: 143 FSB / 4 = >37.
Bottom line, an overclocked 1700+ will "feel" or "drive" faster than a stock 1900+ or Intel 2GHz rig. Because I'm not a gamer, I'm using an old Voodoo3 video card which is holding be back from overclocking faster. Some folks who use newer AGP cards are able to overclock at FSB> 150. They ROCKET. See www.amdmb.com

Sorry, forgot to quote
It was directed towards The Ripper. He said there was no such thing as a 1.6ghz Northwood. I just gave him a couple links he might find interesting. -
Just to throw some crap in im going to be building a dual athlon mp 1900+ system tonight. I might get lucky and finish it early but I will take pictures and post them in this article along with benchmarks and pics of tmpgenc encoding an divx avi and a dvd rip.

Win95-98 and ME do not suport multi-processors, as they are "consumer" DOS systems. NT, Linux, Unix etc... based "buisness" operating systems will support multi-processors.
Time to upgrade. -
It is the chipset that is unreliable. Not the processor. Depending on what chipset u use. Via, AMD, sis, nForce, Ati, ect.... that is where compatability issues come in. Not the processors fault. Not AMDs fault. Blame the chipset makers.
