I've been trying to copy a DVD this morning with both ImgBurn and Nero 7. They both chug along and near the end of the burn die. ImgBurn burps up "I/O Error ..., ScisiStatus, Sense error ...", and "Interpretation: Tracking Servo Failure". Nero just gives me some sort of sector error. The drive will play the original and about 70 to 80% of the "copy" I did reboot once.

We did have a direct lightning strike to our unused TV antenna last week, which knocked out the ethernet PCI card to this computer, but it was replaced. A rotor controller in the other room got singed, and is no longer useful. Otherwise, I have not yet noticed any further difficulties with the PC and its equipment.

What kind of DVD? Commercial DVD? One you made yourself? Both ImgBurn and Nero should refuse to copy any commercial DVDs.

Are you trying a disc to disc copy? I don't recommend that. It's much safer and more reliable to rip the DVD to your hard disk in ISO format and then burn that. It takes longer, but you are a lot less likely to get bad burns.

  3. a tracking servo error kind of points to a dying drive. if your blank dvdrs used to burn without any errors in the past i'd be looking for a new drive. but with the knowledge that a pci card was toasted in that motherboard, i might be looking at replacing the entire computer, no telling what else is fried or about to go belly up.

Disk to disk. Not exactly commercial, but close. They are produced by a good sized science organization, and I've been able to copy them before. I suspect they do them in-house.

I think drive is troubled. I powered this machine down for one hour, and it still gives the same problem. Time to replace it. I'll make one last try, which to make sure the plugs to the drive are firm.

This all took an interesting turn after I pushed on some cables and such. Call the disk above Sci#1. After the pushing episode, I decided to try to copy it with my laptop rather than try again the the den PC. I didn't really want to experience another failure with it on the den PC. However, I had a created a DVD off of DirecTV from some TCM (Turner channel) movies, and tried it on the den PC. It worked. I then tried Sci#2 on the den PC. Meanwhile Sci#1 worked on the laptop! Finally, Sci#2 completed successfully. I now have copies of Sci#1 and Sci#2. Of course, the TCM movie DVD too.

I think I can chalk this up to just a recalcitrant #1 on my den PC.

I may have misunderstood disk to disk above. I would say it works like this
Both programs copy the image to memory or a hard drive. After that, they go into a write phase, at the discretion of the user, and burn the material to a new DVD.
