Will it take less time to upload a pre-compressed video file than uncompressed one? If so, should the video be compressed before uploading and what tool is good for compression of the video file for uploading to deliver?

    Meaningless question.

If you have a compressed file that is 200 MB and an uncompressed file that is 200 MB then they will take approximately the same time to upload/download.

If you have a 1 hour DV file that is 13 GB, and you compress the same file down to a 300 MB Divx encoded AVI file then there will be a huge difference in upload time.

However you are asking a question that can't really be answered specifically until you supply a whole lot more information.

Are you uploading to a video site like youtube ? if so, you may be limited to specific formats that they accept.

Are you uploading to your own server for others to download from ?

Will they be streaming or downloading the files ?

Can anyone recommend a good tool to compress the video file before uploading? I need to upload a video file to YouSendIt or other site for delivery. Compression of the video may save uploading time or some website may have size limit. Please answer question only if you are interested in it and know the answer.

They have been giving you straight answers. The bottom line is some video formats are more compressed than others. Also, generally speaking, programs like Zip or RAR won't be able to further compress many video formats like MPEG, XVid, DivX, etc. That's why we ask what format is it in and what you plan to do with it.

Here is the info. I took about 30 minutes video with my Sony Mini DV and DVC tape and would like to send it to my friend by the online delivery service. What tool can you recommend to compress it before uploading for delivery?

As mentioned, smaller files take less time to upload than larger files. The simplest, least complicated tool (which I HIGHLY recommend, in your case) would be WinFF. Once you capture your footage to hard drive, open it in WinFF and select "Flash video (flv) for web use," and click on the "Convert" button.

At 30 minutes, the file might still be around 75mb. Make sure the "online delivery service" can handle that.

If you want to send your DV file as DV you will have to cut it up into little pieces and upload it that way.

If you are happy to re-encode it then WINFF or Xvid4PSP will allow you to do this. Expect the quality to drop the smaller you make the file though.

Thanks for the info. I will test it. I have a follow up question about cutting a long video into a little pieces for uploading because of the size limit in some website. I recently downloaded several pieces of a talk show video from the YouTube. This video was cut into several pieces because it is too long. Can you tell me how I can continue watching all the video pieces instead of viewing/opening them one by one?

Play them in a player that uses playlists.
