    Hello,
I am looking to purchase a phillips 5992 dvd player which will play back Divx, Xvid files as well.

I have a bunch of avi movies on my computer that i don't want to convert to video_ts and some of them wont play right in quicktime (says its missing some software to play this) but most play just fine in quicktime.

I would like to backup these avi's that do play well onto a disc without converting so they will play in the 5992 as avi (divx, xvid format).

My questions are : is this possible to do?
how many avi movies can i fit on 1 DVD+r?
How do i go about doing this in Toast 6?

    thanks

You can test your files using a USB flash module or a FAT32 formatted hard drive via the 5992's USB2 port. Those that play can be burned as data to a DVDR.

The files play direct from a directory without need to author.

    1) Yes, it's possible to do this, but you desperately need to look at the first post in this sticky:

Any of the options listed may (or may not) cause playback problems on DVD players that support Divx/Xvid playback. It's best to avoid all of them unless you are sure that they are OK to use.
    2) As many as you want, but the more you fit, the worse the quality will be. As a general rule, I'd advise you not to put more than 2 movies per DVD+R unless you have tested and are absolutely sure that doing more at lower quality is something you can live with.
    3) Can't help you here. That's a Mac question. I don't do video on Macs.

Since the files are already encoded it doesn't matter how much you put on a DVDR. One 700 MB movie on each of six discs or all six on one disc, they will look exactly the same. You can fit as many movies as the DVD will hold 4.7 GB with a single layer disc, 8.5 GB with a dual layer disc.

jman98 is referring to when you encode your own movies. The smaller you make them the worse the quality gets. If you encode three movies at 1.4 GB each they will probably look pretty good. If you encode 6 movies at 700 MB each they won't look as good.

Thanks, yes i read that topic but i'm pretty new to all of this so i have to learn more.

Would there be a way for me to convert my avi's to divx files that are all basically within the means of playback on this philips player?

AviRecomp has a template for lowest common denominator set-top playability. You could also do more optimally for your player (it has much better abilities than the AviRecomp template allows for) with VirtualDub or some other program. You'll have to learn a bit more about encoding though.

Of the earlier list of problematic features, only these are applicable to the Philips 5990/5992:

    2) Use of GMC -- only Xvid's 3 warp point GMC is a problem
    3) Resolutions greater than 720x576.

Try them first. Unless they are HD or DV and equal to or under 720x576, they may play. The 5992 even plays wmv files.

I'm guessing your primary computer is a Mac, if so, the Mac forum should be able to help you with Mac specific questions for conversion programs. But most all of the above still applies. Moving you.

Do you have the latest version of Perian installed into your Quicktime Library?
latest is version 1.13, please make sure you have that.

Easy enough to do. If the files are already in DIVX format, then using Toast Titanium v. 8 or higher,
you can author what is known as a "DIVX Disc". Doing so will make the DIVX encoded files be put
into a structured disc that a DIVX enabled player can read, the drawback being is there is no menu,
and the files play consecutively, so you'll need to put them in order of playback before
making the disc. And since the files are already DIVX formatted, you can select to "NEVER REENCODE",
thus insuring the same quality as you see on your mac now.

    Again,
It is real easy to do:
First make sure that you Have the latest Perian installed to test playback of the problem avi files.
If they still do not play back with Perian, then they could be avi files, but encoded with
a different codec than DIVX ( like h.264, h.263, etc) and you'll know that those you will
have to convert to make work.

For the others, simply drag and drop those into Toast Titanium v.8 or later's Video Tab,
under the selection "DIVX DISC" and follow the steps I listed above.
If the .avi's runtime is about say 1 hour an .avi, I have been able to get about 4 to disc
without re-encoding, and I've been able to push eight 1 hour .avis to disc, with some re-encoding.
Toast 6 will not do this, as it was made before DIVX enabled DVD Players became the norm,
so you'll need to upgrade that.

Addendum to terryj's post: Toast 8 and 9 have DivX encoding capability but this was removed from Toast 10.
