  1. hiya,

wanting to get a video converter that can convert any video to mpg2/vob/h264 without a change in its quality. seemingly a simple request but trying handbrake, winff, mediacoder avanti and every other bloody video coder under the sun i cant get a program to complete this simple task. this is what everyone wants after all. a video converter that copies the video and audio and only changes the container so it can be read by video editing software or read by a ps3 xbox or whatever. why isnt this a simple program download and simple function. so frustrating.

need some serious help so i can just convert alllllll my video to a lossless format with varying containers depending on what medium i want to watch. ie convert everything to h264 with a mp4 container or a .mpg container.

pleaseeeeee what can we do here. if only media coder did what it promised out of the box. !!!

You can use a mp4 multiplexer like YAMB or MP4Muxer or for dvds vob2mpg. BUT just changing container wont help ALL the time as the container might not support all formats or the ps3/xbox might not support the h264 profile or the audio codec.

It's much better to get a htpc that can play everything.

  3. well, mp4muxer of course didnt work with the first video i tried. what a surprise ! and i dont want to convert vobs to mpegs..

i want to convert all videos to mpeg or mp4. the ps3 does support h264. thats all i want to do. convert all my videos to h264 with mp4 and mpeg containers. so i can watch them all on ps3, and edit them if i convert to mpeg2. such a simple request that almost everyone wants but no program does this.

the copy video copy audio and change of format and container options in all these programs dont do that !! WHY FFS!

can someone point me in the right direction here ive tried 50 fcking programs.

This sure is what everybody wants but never gets!

You can copy (remux) certain formats into another container but you can't "copy" one format to another format. You can only re-encode to another format and this is never lossless.

I'm afraid you'll have to live with the reality.

  5. surely it can be done... that doesnt seem right, why cant you copy a video stream and audio stream and recreate a container for that stream ??

im new to all this obviously, is there something i should read up on to understand this further ?

Here are some definitions that will get yo started:

    Compression
The process of removing redundancies in digital data to reduce the amount that must be stored or transmitted. Lossless compression removes only enough redundancy so that the original data can be recreated exactly as it was. Lossy compression sacrifices additional data to achieve greater compression.

    Convert
To change from one form into another. In video obviously it is to change one form of video into another. For example, many people like to convert divx to MPEG, quicktime to AVI, etc. Conversions to a final format is called encoding - an example is AVI to VCD MPEG-1. VCDhelp Convert Section

    --------------------

Those are from the videohelp glossary found on the upper left of your screen on this website.

Basically any time you change video from one format or another you are going to lose some quality. It might be imperceptable to some people but to others any reduction at all is not acceptable. However it is unavoidable.

It can be masked or reduced but it won't be a 100% 1:1 duplicate like you are asking for. Even in the digital world that is not possible. EDIT - I suppose an exception is taking a high def stream and transposing it into a m2ts file or into avchd - but the original high def format is not altered - but you are not techinically converting that is a stream change - but to "reduce" that into a mp4 or mkv file is a compression hence lossy.

You can get very good results but "perfect" is not realistic.

Many many converters have profiles for the ps3 and xbox 360. If you want 5.1 you may need to use aac audio and only if your amplifier supports it. Though mp4 is supposed to support ac3 audio now so that shoudln't be too much of a factor.

Another option to consider is something like a popcorn hour box or a western digital tv media player. These units connect to your tv and to a harddrive. They can play video files directly without a computer. They are also more flexible than a ps3 or xbox 360.

  7. ok so you cant "stream change" a crappy flv and "transpose" it to another format/container ?? what am i missing here...

na want the ps3 to run everything in as high a quality as possible, use it as a source driver, or will be soon, for all my music and want the same for video, seems i have format/container problems for both audio and video atm.

so if i HAVE to use a converter, is there one that can do h264 mp4s in as high a quality as possible.. keeping the original framerate, bitrate, copying the audio etc etc.. basically having a 1:1 duplicate as the maximum goal of the conversion; ...... ???

and for editing the h264 mp4s i can use the soon to be released total videoredo editor...

    http://www.videoredo.net/msgBoard/showthread.php?t=7950&page=4

"Baring any unforeseen issues, we will be going into semi-public beta, actually more like alpha, with the H.264 support next week. Its frame accurate, and seems to work very well with many types of files including those captured by HDPVR."

what should i be looking at if h264 lossless 1:1 duplicate format conversion is my goal... what app/or how can i do this, with preservation of framerate/ bitrate/audio etc in mind.....

  8. please can someone assist further here with my simple yet common requirement.. im sure this could help many people not just me as h264 is clearly going to be the standard codec in the future.... and mp4 is looking to be the standard video format? so it seems. any help on this please.....

  9. try handbrake, it has a preset for the ps3.

everything will re-encode to h264 if it's not already in h264, it's not just a simple container change. that's just not going to happen.

You've already been 'assisted'. Why beat a dead horse? You want a video converter that can convert any video to mpg2/vob/h264 without a change in its quality. And you've already been told multiple times it can't be done. They can be converted by being reencoded with the accompanying quality loss, sometimes an obvious loss and sometimes not noticeable.

And I'd recommend XviD4PSP, but it won't just be a 1:1 container change.

I am having a problem with downloaded MP4 and MKV basketball games which I cannot convert properly to VOB, using AVS Video Converter 6. Problem is that the video frames are herky jerky, not smooth.

can anyone recommend a proper converter? I'm new to all this too.

well, i dont believe you. i believe it can be done.

maybe massive ammounts of data is needed to create the lossless conversion but im sure it can be done. will ask further in advanced conversion section as regardless xvid4psp is not the best conversion option, it didnt even allow me to open a wmv i have.
