Thanks for the link, I'm in the UK though.

I've only ever had onboard graphics and don't really know too much about hardware or what I'm looking for, so I was hoping for some recommendations for the best PCI cards that will run Windows 7 aero

    Thanks.

Are your computer details up to date? AMD 1.1 GHz?

You should consider an upgrade for W7.

If your altimate goal is running Windows 7 w. aero effects (as opposed to just a performance upgrade), you should probably verify that your current hardware is Win7 compatable. Also, try to verify whatever video upgrade you decide on will run the aero stuff. I haven't tried Windows 7 yet, but when I was experimenting with Vista, it would not run aero unless a certain level of video performance was available.

Thanks for the replies. To clarify, it's PCI not PCI Express I need.

I just want it for the aero effects, not gaming or anything.

    Thanks.

I think you @ least need a card that runs on Vista drivers to have a chance, do they even make a pci gfx card that has a Vista driver?

Here is an 8 series nvidia card for $55USD

These cards seem to be what I am looking for but unfortunately they only deliver to USA. I'll see if I can find them from the UK somehow. I can only see PCI Express versions on Ebay UK.

    Thanks.

You're probably wasting your time on eBay. Try dabs, ebuyer or any of the other proper online component suppliers.

My brother is running Windows 7 on an Intel 965 motherboard. The GMA X3000 on the 965 chipset has a core clock of 667Mhz and 384MB of memory. It supports VC-1 but I don't believe it supports H264 1080p.

Strange that ASUS did not have PCI-e on your motherboard since the Intel DG965WH board does.

EDIT: Sorry, I misread the 865 chipset as a 965. I would take others' advice and upgrade the PC to something that will support Windows 7. The P4P800 is a dinosaur.

  18. Ebuyer have a Nvidia Geforce FX5200 256mb PCI for about £49, it's extremely "low end", but i'm almost certain that you will be able to run Aero with that.

Not sure if you'll find drivers for Vista/W7 though.

*EDIT*. After a little research it seems that the FX5200 may not be Aero compatible after all.

Any Aero compitible PCI cards are likely to be expensive, personally I would scour Ebay for an AGP motherboard, and get a cheap GF 6200a. It could work out cheaper than buying a new PCI card.

You might consider a BIOSTAR P4M900M4 motherboard instead of a video card for your 478 processor if you don't want to build a modern PC. I bought this board when my MSI 865PE board fried for my 3.2Ghz socket 478 P4 CPU. I use it for a backup for my Q6600 machine in case it goes down and I need to get online.

It supports High Definition video with VIA S3 Chrome9 integrated graphics and has a PCI-e x16 slot if you want to add a video card later. You'd need to get DDR2 memory which is cheap. I bought my board and memory for less than $100.

Here is a link to the board if you want to check it out.

It's true that my motherboard is quite old, but it runs XP perfectly. I have run the Win7 Upgrade Adviser, and everything is up to spec apart from the graphics.

I appreciate you looking at motherboards for me, and I will consider them in the future.

Right now I just want a PCI graphics card that I can put in my existing machine from ebuyer or somewhere in the UK to enable aero, as Win7 basic theme is horrible!

As I said before, I haven't had any experience with video cards and am finding it slightly confusing! When I search for 9500gt I get results from different manufacturers, It seems that they are all Nvidia Geforce but all made by different brands Example: http://www.ebuyer.com/search?q=9500gt&x=0&y=0 They are all PCI-E, but I find the fact that they're all made by different people quite confusing.

I guess this just means that they all have the same chip on them but are just put together and sold by different companies

    Thanks.

That's right, as well as making complete graphics cards Nvidia, ATI, etc also sell their chipsets to anyone that wants them to put on their own graphcs cards. Your point about wanting to only change the graphics card for now is a perfectly valid argument but, and it's a pretty big but, you are looking for a PCI card with a top spec chipset. There aren't many but if you take the Nvidia 9 series as an example, you can expect to pay far more for a graphics card that will fit your existing motherboard than you would pay for a replacement motherboard with Aero compliant onboard graphics.
