You could try MediaInfo, though that type of information can easily be lost when the files are re-encoded, or sometimes even transferred. You are more likely to find out what program it was encoded with. Authoring doesn't leave that many marks. Maybe a pro type authoring program would. You are probably looking for 'meta' info that is included on the file.

Why the interest in what authoring program was used?

    And welcome to our forums.

Ifoedit, VMGM_MAT, the Provider ID (Address (00000040)) may contain some info about the last program that authored or re-wrote the DVD structure. Pressed discs either leave this field blank or put the title of the movie but some authoring (DVDlab), decrypting (DVDfab) and shrinking (DVDShrink) tools, among many, leave identifiers in that text zone.

I noticed you said you tried ifoedit but if it's a pressed disc it's as I said above........ If you already know about that program then you can't be too new at it.

What kind of disc are you checking?

    btw) Welcome to the site.
There's not much to do but then I can't do much anyway.

    Well

Thank you all, The reason I want it to know the authoring program, was because I like the menu of this disk, looking around the web I finally found out the program was DVD Studio and sadly only available on Macs I got a PC with a quad .

    http://www.cs.uregina.ca/Links/class-info/325/idvd-dvdstudiopro/index.html

do you know of any alternatives to it? a pc program that makes that nice menus?

or maybe running a virtual pc with mac os and dvdstudio 3? will it work?

currently using adobe cs4 master suite + DVDLab (probably after effects and dvdlab will do it but it will be a lot of work)

    thanks in advance

It's interesting when you read the origin of DVD Studio on Wikipedia it owes its roots to older windows programs.
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/DVD_Studio_Pro

What do you like about the menus? The artwork? The navigation?

The menu is just a mpeg within a vob that plays for a set time and then if authored right loops until a hotspot or key is pressed or a standalone corresponding remote button is selected. The artwork is in the hands of the designer although some programs may have a larger set of built-in sample mpeg, background images, buttons and arrows most will allow you to import your own. Special navigation can be easily replicated in most modern DVD authoring programs. You mention DVDlab and that's a pretty good one. There's very little if anything that it can't do and you can choose a more simple style for speed or a very complex structure DVD to author.
There's not much to do but then I can't do much anyway.
