  1. Hello all,

I am looking for the VCD "variant" of AVStoDVD?! I squeezed my VCD file, but would like to author and create a small
menu with it, before burning it for real.

    Thanks for any input!

DVD2SVCD is free and despite the name can produce VCD output. VCD is an old, low tech format so there's not a lot of demand for tools to work with it or create it. As little as I have to deal with VCD, I just encode it myself with something like TMPGenc.

You definitely better explain what you mean when you say you "squeezed" your VCD file as VCD format has very strict requirements and if you don't follow them, you don't have a VCD. See the "WHAT IS VCD" link at the upper left corner of this website.

Finally, VCD menus need to be primitive text based menus with no moving video support and no audio. Some applications may let you create menus with audio and/or moving video, but such is not part of the standard. In fact, menu support is so poor that the majority of commercial VCD makers don't even bother with menus as they are more trouble than they are worth.

A very good, simple (and free) VCD authoring tool is VCDEasy. Get the last free version (1.1.5.2, I believe). As jman98 said, the VCD specifications don't allow for fancy menus like DVDs, but as long as you're not expecting other than something very simple, you can do it.

  4. Thanks for the answers...I am working in Mali, West-Africa where VCD's are still hot Every body is playing them, in often real poor quality.

I did look at VCDEasy but might have looked at the wrong (paid!) version. I will look again...

  5. oh btw

with Sorensen squeeze I could squeeze my QT reference file into a (S)VCD ... I guess that would give the proper output right?

VCD uses only MPEG1, and only certain specific resolutions, frame rates and bitrates (as others have already suggested, you may want to read "What is VCD" in the upper left hand corner). Sorenson is not MPEG1.

As to VCDEasy, search for the version that I referred to. If you don't, you'll get a bunch of links to the payware, as you found.

VideoHelp's Tools page for VCDEasy has a link to 1.1.5.2. Just look for "Download the old VCDEasy 1.1.5.2 freeware here(10MB)."
If cameras add ten pounds, why would people want to eat them?
