Does anyone have any experience with removing a hardrive from a Dish player and installing it in your computer? If so,can you do anything with the files?MP2
I have tried, but am unable to see the installed hardrive. (Installed as a slave) I also placed one of my computers drives in the dish player, but it didn't like the switch.
I am interested in recording "classic television" on a VCD or SVCD from the files created by the dish player.
Thankyou jatilford

No can do. Apparently that is a propriatory format that Windows OSes can't read. I have put a larger drive into my Dishplayer but when I tried to read the old drive, Windows 98SE says that the first boot sector is non DOS. Even to do the upgrade, the DP files have to be written using DOS or Linux. Maybe someone will figure it out but as of today, it can't be done...

Bummer. I was watching TechTV a month ago and a viewer was on the video chat, he said he had all of the episodes on DVD. I just figured he was doing a hardrive switch. I did find information on changing the drive to a larger one.

Yeah, since the new bug fix for the older DPs (7100 or 7200) was released last year, you can put any size drive in that you want. Some people have successfully added the new 160 Gig IBM drives. I used a Quantum 30 Gig Barracuda that is dead silent compared to the 8.6 Gig Seagate the 7100 originally came with. That one sounded like nails on concrete every time it started a recording. Lately, I've found it hard to live without the easy ability to be able to record programs a week in advance. There are also less screw ups with missed recordings. I only have to use the 44 hour guide occassionally when the program database becomes corrupted. Over here (North America) there are a lot of old series being released on DVD. Prices have dropped a great deal since the format was launched a few years back. I don't see the point of ripping them anymore since they are so cheap to begin with. And with a lot of old movies (Shaw Bros. kung fu flicks for example) and TV series (like The Beverley Hill Billies for another example) in the bargain rack at Wal-Mart for $5 a disk you have to be REALLY poor to not be able to buy them outright. Everything else I want is available for rent or off the sats...

Thanks, I think I'll check out the local Wal-Mart, but I enjoy the satisfaction of being able to tinker around & figure out a way to make things happen.

Apparently, you CAN rip the contents of the HD from Dishplayers... -
Thanks for the links! Question is for the HD upgrade it was refering to the older Dish PVR 7000 series. Does anyone know if it also applies to the newer 501 model? This question also applies to the riping of the contents as the authors did not mention which PVR he was using. I've emailed both authors so hopefully they can answer some of my question.
Thanks again
