I also have a Nokia 5800 and naturally want to use the best converter for this beautifull device (plays videos in 640x360 resolution on a 3.2 inch screen). I've tried a buch of free software for video conversion to MP4 format (not only for Nokia 5800) and below are my findings.

    * Super - I don't use it, because it is unstable on my system. Sometimes I couldn't even close the application. What a crap.
    * Mediacoder - works fine, allows a good amount of controls. The results are also good. Score 7/10.
    * Format Factory - this little application works surprisingly well for me. There is even a preset for Nokia 5800. Easy to use, quite versatile and good conversion results. Score 8/10.
    * Xvid4PSP - Does the job as well, but requires some experimenting to find the best presets. A good all round application. Score 9/10.
    * Handbrake - I love the interface. 8) Not so versatile in controls. Crashes when I try to convert MKV to MP4 with AAC audio. Can't inspect visually the cropping effect before the encoding. Seems a bit slow than the other applications. Quality is good. Score 8/10.
    * Any Video Converter Free - for beginners only. I'd like to see more settings here. Score 6/10.
    * Avidemux - I love it. Does much more than you would expect. Score 9/10.
    * WinFF - Installed it, looked at the settings and uninstalled it. Useless. Score 1/10.
    * Xmedia Recode - Did some decent conversions, but there was no love. Score 7/10.
    * Fair Use Wizard - didn't try this extensively, since it was limted to converting DVDs (with a requirement to make ISOs first).
    * Free Zune Video Converter - Simple and effective. Not that versatile. Score 7/10.

    Hope this helps.

    Hi
Thank you for your list of converters.
My wife has a Nokia 5800 and asked me to put some movies on for her. I said no problem my dear... The time is now 0215 and I am beginning to be very frustrated about all this. I have been able to encode a couple of movies but most of them either lack sound or picture. Sometimes the sound is played with half or less the speed. Is is really this hard to encode movies?? I have only tried to encode samples of HD *.mkv files (720p)
You mention Avidemux as a good piece of software but it lack batch processing.. My plan was to drag and drop all my 100 movie files into a converter and lean back.. Too easy???

It was a while ago, that I've posted this...
To make easy batch video conversion for 5800XM, I'd recommend Format Factory (download the latest version, there is a preset for 5800XM) or Any Video Converter Free (use the settings from Format Factory). I would also try Handbrake, but I often had issues in mkv to mp4 encoding.

The recommended conversion settings should be:
    video encode: MPEG4 (DivX)
    file format: mp4
    resolution: 640x360
    aspect ratio: 16:9
    video bitrate: 768kbps
    framerate: 25fps
    audio encode: aac
    audio bitrate: 96kbps
