Please tell me a free program to split a large file (5, 6, 7 GB) in several smaller files.

    Cheers.

Just want to clarify, you might have some difficulty with those apps.

    2 Questions:
    1. Do you plan on reconstituting them first before using them again?
    2. Are those files non-media files? (if they count by #frames/fields, or #samples, instead of #bytes--they're media files)

If you answered YES to both, then you're probably good to go with those apps.

If you answered NO to both, then you should NOT use them. You should be using remuxing cutter/joiners or standard editing apps. Virtualdub would be a good starting point here (with its "segmented" AVI output option).

If you answered NO to the 1st, but YES to the 2nd, the best choice would be an editing application native to the paritcular file format(s).

OP didn't say he wanted to archive files--just "split".

And I just found a major problem with 7zip...
If you are in Windows and 7zip a directory, you're screwed if you try and unzip it from w/in Linux. This is because of the way 7zip describes directory contents (it is unacceptable with Linux/Unix nomenclature), plus it doesn't store/code/pass ACL permissions.
Just went down a bit in my book. Too bad, too. I WAS liking it best.

OT: I still would love to see a "Universal" opensource compressor/archiver. Universal in the way that it will parse any file and then pass it along to whichever "compression/decompression", "archiving" or "imaging" plugin/addon is appropriate, and can DL plugins/addons for when it isn't already installed. And one that is smart, in that it compares flavors of compressors and automatically picks the most efficient one for the file contents.
