My Mitsubishi Diamond Plus 200 CRT has died.
It went into power save mode and never woke back up...
This really sucks because it was such a sweet ass freakin' monitor. 21" viewable (4:3) with Mitsubishi's Diamandtron TF tech (poor-man's Trinitron).
I'm really going to miss this beast because it has such a beautiful picture. Plus where the hell am I going to find a monitor with semi-comparable image quality and a 12.25" screen height without paying an arm and a leg?
Seriously, to get an LCD with a viewable screen height over 12" is going to be pricey as hell and does anybody even make CRT monitors anymore? the last time I looked you could still order 20-21" Trinitrons online but they weren't exactly cheap and the shipping on these monsters is almost as much as the price!
I've got LCDs at work and I just don't like 'em... Image quality is poor on LCDs compared to the old CRTs.
R.I.P. big-ass monitor, I'll miss you.

anybody know off hand what size 'widescreen' monitor has 12" viewable height?
my use of Pythagorean theorem left me years ago...

About 23", assuming a 16:10 monitor. About 20" for a 4:3 monitor (I have a few old 20" 1440x1050 Samsung LCDs like this). I'd shoot for a 24" or larger 16:10 monitor.

A good LCD looks better than a CRT -- a poor LCD looks worse.
My main LCD is an LG, and it's great. I recently added a new Acer, and it's not bad either.
Dell, Westinghouse, off brands -- many of them cook the values, look like shit -- many are far too bright, give you a headache in a few hours of looking at it.Want my help? Ask here! (not via PM!)

My last CRT monitor was a 17" Panasonic and it died early on. The cost to ship it back for warranty was $50, and that was some time ago. But the replacement lasted me over five years and I finally gave it away with a economy computer I built for a friend. It lasted another several years, though the contrast was fading. It died violently when the power company lost a ground and put 2000VAC on his house wiring. But they will replace it along with everything else that burned up.
My favorite LCD monitor is a Hanns-G 22" at present. It has a HDMI and VGA inputs and works great as a HDTV or computer monitor. Great contrast ratio. (And it was cheap)

I do have to admit that my dislike for LCDs is based purely on experiences with early models and the cheap-ass 19" (4:3) ViewSonics we have at work that are fairly old.
I stopped by BestBuy, Target, and Costco today just looking around, still not terribly impressed with what I've seen but I wasn't exactly looking in the best places either.
First impressions: WTF? What am I going to put under the monitor? Why the hell doesn't anybody make an LCD with a base that you can raise/lower the screen on? Even the old ass p.o.s. monitors we have at work have that feature.

NewEgg list 45 LCD monitors with height, pivot, tilt, and swivel controls:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/ProductList.aspx?Submit=ENE&N=2010190020+1297019608&QksA...e=&srchInDesc=
There are also catagories for height only (1 monitor); height, swivel, and tilt (14); and height, pivot, and swivel (2).
Did your 21" CRT have a height adjustment? -
Thats a new one. Previously, I have only heard the term "dead soldier" applied to an empty beer, wine, or liquor container.
Newegg had a few monitors with a height adjustment or a tilt adjustment, but I expect some people have to buy a monitor stand http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16824994001 to get everything they need.
Newegg has a sale on Samsung monitors for the holiday. http://promotions.newegg.com/Samsung/051109mem/index.html?cm_sp=TabStore_ComputerHardw...%2f118x118.gif
[Edit] I need to type faster! -
Most of the monitors I'm looking at have a built-in stand that can't be removed or adjusted...
I'm not looking to spend a lot here - $250 is my MAX budget on this. It's just for my office PC, not the HTPC (that's connected to the HDTV anyway).
I certainly won't be able to mount what I buy to the wall or anything..."To steal ideas from one person is plagiarism; to steal from many is research." - Steven Wright

Why do you need 12 inches high? Is there some specific app you use? What resolution did you run your old CRT at? Would the same vertical resolution with a smaller height be OK? What about a pivot monitor where you can just rotate the monitor between landscape and portrait modes?
-
Samsung 23" models that are below $250 and include free shipping.
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16824001317 and http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16824001314 -
Dell's UltraSharp 22-inch widescreen is $189 right now ($229 - $40 instant savings) - height & tilt.
http://accessories.us.dell.com/sna/products/Displays/productdetail.aspx?c=us&l=en&s=dh...9&sku=320-6107
(I use the older 20-inch non-widescreen monitors at work & home - hmmm, might just upgrade)
-
I might be as concerned about the vertical resolution as much as the vertical size. If you ran you 21" CRT at 2048x1536 you might be unhappy with a 20" to 24" LCD with only 1050, 1080 or 1200 lines.

Sorry your monitor died, but at least it died peacefully - I have seen CRT TVs and monitors die violently - not a pretty sight. I really think that you will enjoy the LCD - much easier on the eyes.
Some idiot on eBay is trying to sell your old monitor for $647 plus shipping - everything they sell is outrageously expensive.

HOLY SHIT! That's retarded. They don't even give any specs, info, or pics...
I know that monitor was pricey when it came out, but it has a sticker right on the back saying it was manufactured in Jan 2000. Anybody who is stupid enough to pay $650 for a 9 year old used monitor deserves to get screwed.
I'm liking this OK so far...
If I change the resolution to anything below the MAX it shrinks it and leaves black space all around the displayed area...
I gotta squint to read shit, even at the max resolution.
Of course it does sit back about a foot further from me than the old one did (and I could move it another foot if wanted to!).
Looks like I'll need to play with some of my font/Windows settings..."To steal ideas from one person is plagiarism; to steal from many is research." - Steven Wright

Just wanted to express my sympathies over the loss of your beloved CRT.
I love my CRT too. -

minidv2dvd made a good point. A major difference between CRTs and LCDs is that LCDs have a single native resolution that they are happy with, everything else looks like crap, IMO. I've ran into that with my Hanns-G monitor. It's native is 1680 X 1050, and with any other res, the text is fuzzy. My old CRT would work with multiple resolutions and never complain.
And, of course, Vista or my ATI card will often set my monitor at 1400 or 1200 or some other stupid res and I have to reset it. It does this if I don't have the monitor/KB/Mouse set to that PC at boot with my KVM switch. It does the same with a Nvidia card in the second PC connected to it. A bit irritating, but only takes a second to fix.
I can always tell the res is wrong because my recycle can has moved towards the middle of the screen instead of the corner. -
The Native resolution on the Samsung 2343 is 2048x1152 but I have to set mine at 1680x1050 or I can't view it because everything is too small.
Would I be better off setting it to 2048x1152 and setting DPI to 120?
The reason that I bought the Samsung is because my 19" HP CRT was on it's last leg. I was dissapointed at first because the CRT (after it warmed up) looked much better than the LCD but I'm getting used to it now. I had to build a stand that tilts the monitor forward and raises the height so I can view it at almost eye level. If I view it without the stand the top of the screen is darker than the rest of the screen. The stand is 5 inches tall and could still be a couple of inches taller. -
darrells - yes the native res will be sharper. try to get your eye level as close to the center of an lcd as you can. they have a narrrow angle at which they can be viewed from.
-
as I read the last 4 posts, LCDs are better than CRTs how?
