  1. I hate to sound like a dinosaur, but does anyone know of any retailer who stocks Digital 8 camcorders? My Sony has been repaired three times and is currently broken again and I want to purchase a new one instead. I have tons of Digital 8 records from the past 10 years. Thanks in advance for your comments and please try not to laugh too hard.

your best bet is ebay or craigslist...have a friend who has a sony digital8....he used it a lot and got some use out of it but we tried to find sumthin new and there was no luck..so i got him to purchase a minidv and we now use his digital 8..playback only...to transfer all of his tapes thru a capture card...he really loved his D8 but times move on...you could also look for a digital 8 player

It would have to be an official dealer advertising on ebay for the new cam's warranty to be valid, believe it or not.

I don't think you want a new one, anyway. It's too obsolete. I think you just want a used one to run off your tapes to your computer, edit a bit, and display with a more convenient medium like DVD or Blu-ray (keeping your tapes of course)...then resell your used cam where you got it...eBay.
Ditto craig's list...you can at least take a tape along with you to test.

I recently found a new in box GV-D200 player on ebay and grabbed it as a backup for my Hi8 and Digital8 collection.

Craigslist is better for used equipment because you can meet the local seller and evaluate the camcorder before you transact.

With ebay you never know the exact condition.

The better Digital8 camcorder models were the 700-800 series manufactured 2001-2004 or so.

    Example: http://cgi.ebay.com/SONY-DCR-TRV740-DIGITAL-8-CAMCORDER-CAMERA-HANDYCAM_W0QQitemZ19030...3A1%7C294%3A50

The 740 has two desirable features...
    - Analog pass through to DV IEEE-1394
    - Plays Hi8 and Video8 analog tapes and converts analog to digital DV format.
