A friend of my sister's set a bag of incense sticks on the bottom side of Disc 4 of Season 2 of her "Charmed" DVDs. The oils in the incense penetrated the plastic bag and completely through the bottom layer of plastic of the DVD. I told her to ALWAYS put DVDs back into their cases, even if she was just going to take them out of the player for a short time. (Just like old 5.25" floppies and their sleeves.)
The plastic bag was like it was glued to the DVD, almost like solvent gluing polystyrene model parts. I tried resurfacing and plastic polish but it's hopeless. That area of the disc seems to have been softened and the reflective layer is discolored.
It's surprising how that oil could do this to plastic that isn't bothered at all by solvents like lacquer thinner! I wouldn't want incense smoke anywhere near my DVDs either, dunno what that could do to them.

Some oils used for fragrance double as solvents, particularly citrus oils.
