Is it useless to get a cheap blu-ray player without any internet connection? (no ethernet, wifi, etc). This is a Profile 1.1 player, so BD-Live isn't even an issue... but don't you need an internet connection to download new encryption keys as they are released? old ones retired, etc. I thought that was one of the bonus points to their new encryption methods, was that the keys can get updated on the players, etc.

    Thanks,

So long as there is some way to update the firmware without a network connection. A lot of people will not have their players connected to the internet, but I know over here (Australia) the current crop of discs are causing playback issues on many older players, which is easily rectified by a firmware update. This is not a BD Live issue.

BD players also get firmware updates from new Blu-Ray media. I'm not sure if the user is told this is happening.

so the players DO need to get updated key information from the web? So in the future, as new keys are implemented, some new titles won't play, and the player will be somewhat useless. Do the manufacturers offer downloadable (and burnable) updates to this information?

Just want to be informed before I buy...

You need to talk to manufacturer about firmware updates. This is often done from a file downloaded on a computer, then burned to a CD or DVD.

Separately, the HDMI standard allows for HDCP key revisions off commercial Blu-Ray media. In this way unauthorized connections can be blocked by the key file database update.

For what it's worth, I have a Momitsu BluRay player and I deliberately did NOT connect it to the internet. I care nothing about BD-Live and frankly it's a big nuisance to connect the player to the internet from where I have it right now. I don't have a lot of BluRay discs and my interests are mostly in foreign releases, but every BluRay I've played in it has worked fine.

PS3 is good for updates, plus it's wireless.

You may want to post your question at the Bluray player forum at AVS forums.

I don't have my panny blu-ray player connected to the internet as well. It's only a handful of titles that supposedly has playback issues. None of the movies I had any interest in anyway. Just my 2 cents!

  11. The ethernet connection is for firmware updates and accessing BD-Live content,if you use a CD to update and have no interest in BD-Live then your player will work without it.Some new BD players have streaming capabilities(Netflix,Amazon, etc) so that's something to consider.

I have not connected my PS3 via ethernet,. However, a while back when my PS3 was about a month old I inserted a commercial disk and a prompt appeared on the screen indicating that it was time to update my firmware. It asked me if it was okay to do so and if it was okay I was to press a specific button on the remote. It also indicated that if I did not update immediately my player would soon cease to function. Given the alternative to press a button now or figure it out later, I pressed the button and I think that was it. It took less than a minute then it played the commercial disk.

So, I was told it was happening.
I still don't know if all commercial disks do this firmware check. Maybe it's just on Sony movie disks, but I wasn't about to wait for another prompt.
