  1. Any type of video that I try to open in vdubmod 1.5 is giving me the same error message:

"virtualdubmob could not locate decompressor for format yyyy"

or for non-mkv files it says:

"virtualdubmod could not locate decompressor for format xvid"

I'm using corecodec (CoreAVC). Tried googling to no avail. What gives?

virtualdubmod requires vfw decoders and coreavc wont work. Try ffdshow and enable xvid and h264 in the vfw decoders settings.

Or try avidemux or latest virtualdub 1.9.2

    Then can't decode this 'directly'.
    Use Avisynth script.
Or extract AVC video stream and use AVC2AVI (then required VfW codec for decoding - can use ffdshow VfW or decoer from x264vfw).

Just install Xvid codec (eventually can use ffdshow VfW).

    CoreAVC it's DirectShow filter.
VirtualDub (and VDM of course) use VfW codecs to decoding, but not DirectShow filters (exception - when used DirectShow input driver or Avisynth script).

It's probably easier just to create an AVISynth script for frameserving into VDubMod, but you can also try this:

In the Open (file open) window, there should be a 'Use AviSynth template' option at the bottom, with a dropdown. Pick 'DirectShowSource' from that dropdown, then load your MKV. Then, be sure to tell VDubMod how to compress the streams, and have it save to AVI.

forget x264 and vdub. x264 over vfw is a silly idea.
vdub is great for AVI, but for anything else, use a different tool.

The latest AVI Demux is probably a better option unless there is something very specific on vdub that you need.
