This probably a stupid question but this is not clear to me from what I have read.
Recently I've had a look at new PC's and the ones I've seen all come with Vista 64 bits.
Would the programs that I have on my XP machine and all the free programs that I got from this wonderful site still work in a 64 bits environment?
On the MS site, they don't even mention whether the Vista versions are 32 or 64 bits.
In another post Bjs wrote that there is a x86 program folder.
I would appreciate if someone would clarify this.
    Thanks

  2. Most will work. Some might take a little fiddling with the installation. You'll have to ask about specific programs.

I have had vista64 for the last 2 years,99% of the video/audio apps work with no problems, only program i had to setup with compatibilty setting was dvd2svcd and i dont use that program anymore, all 32bit programs install in the x86 folder but it doesnt make any difference if a 32bit program is installed in the regular program folder for 64bit.

This question gets asked every week by new users to vista64.
    I think,therefore i am a hamster.

The applications that are less likely to work properly with Vista64 are the pro video higher end stuff. The Adobe CS3 suite and previous come with warnings and issues. Same with AVID and Vegas. Check the documentation for your apps. You probably need to upgrade.

Then there are the older Hauppauge PVR tuners, ATI All-in-Wonder cards and others that still lack Vista 64 support and are likely to never be updated.

The more older hardware and apps you plan to use, the more you can expect issues.

I keep older computers running older OS to support older hardware. I still have a Win2000 machine running Miro-Pinnacle cards under Adobe Premiere 6.5 including SCSI RAID. Then I keep XP P4 capture machines full of ATI AIW and Hauppauge PVR tuners. The newer Vista machines get the latest OS and apps.

  7. Usually you have no problems with programs. Usually you have problems with drivers for your hardware.

However when it comes to high end editing systems, programs and drivers are all in one
