I can only assume you are using external subtitle files. It's possible the files are damaged or don't adhere to the spec. They may also just have a glitch in them, especially if two parts were merged together. A PC can often overcome many issues with various types of files that a standalone player can't handle. You might also have a problem if the movie is in two parts (movie cd1.avi, movie cd1.srt, movie cd2.avi, movie cd2.srt). The philips players that I've used, will automatically go from movie cd1.avi to movie cd2.avi, often without a pause, but the subs have to be manually started.

Philips DVD players that support Divx may have problems if there are any errors or weird characters in the subtitles file. I edited a subtitles file on a Linux server and my DVP-642 refused to play it until I opened the file under Word Pad and saved it under Windows. You'll have to manually look at the subtitles file at the point where it stops and look for errors or strange characters. You may have to use a binary editor to see if any control characters are at the point where it stops.
