I have recently started ripping all of my DVDs and even a few HD/BR discs for view on my WD TV. Now, with the various types of media, I label the rips as (for example) "Iron Man (2007) 1080p Blu-ray", or "Boondock Saints DVD".

So my apologies to those who practice the same naming conventions. What once looked suspect, I now have a clearer understanding and should not judge based simply on a name.

    BUUUUUUT...

The following cases will still get the finger from me:
    • There is no reason to put DVDrip, as it is on your PC in avi or mp4 form, so that would be redundant and suspicious.
    • We know that your name is not KLAXXON or AXXO, so that is still a full confession right there.
    • If you cannot figure out (what is supposedly) your own rip or conversion, you are completely full of shit.
    • For the love of all that is holy, it is now 2009! Can you stop with the rar questions?!?! Supposedly, you came here because we are the experts, so as experts, we know the routine and all the tricks. We know that your aunt didn't send vacation videos to you in 120 rar files and conveniently forgot how to unpack them.
    • If any of the above applies, and you start with "I downloaded...", you are fucked! Do not even THINK of giving the tired "helping a friend/got it legally/Like you guys are saints" excuses. They will be equally derided.

So, nit picking file sorters keep doing what you're doing with impunity. All the rest, do it somewhere else, or just don't do it.*

I have very specific templates set up, so the original format is good enough for me (for now). I have all the Collectorz series, so I may be organizing a little stricter in the near future.

I have that version!... I got it on a special sale for $20. All I had to do was following a pop up that appeared one time and took me to this place where I met the nicest chinese people!.

...And they even threw in Office2009 for free... what a steal!.

You should start to add "l33t.cam.dvd-quality.screener.rip.Irule.bitches.mpg" to the end of file names, so you can be cool like all the other high school kids.

I though about that too, but the file name is only so long on the OSD 8)

i have to disagree on that part.
not only do i rip my own dvds, i also capture from tv, so i do add dvdrip, tvrip or vhsrip to my files. sure i know which dvds i own, but you know how it is.. old brain and to many dvds lol. in time, i may get confused otherwise

You are incorrect on many levels.

    1. You do not "rip" television or vhs. Those are both straight recordings.
    2. It is still redundant to call it a dvdrip, as it is no longer a rip, since it has been converted, and it is quite obvious that it was ripped since it is no longer a disc. The suffix "rip" just adds that much more suspicion to the file if you are trying to get help with it (which you shouldn't - see my first post, third point).

Don't get mired in the defense of pirates (or playing devil's advocate). No one is accusing you of pirating material. It's just that the naming conventions can be so obvious when it is warez.

well yes, you are technically correct.
i, however still call them rips, because they were "ripped" from its origin i.e.
the tv broadcast or a vhs tape instead of a dvd disc.

of course there isn't any decryption going on and i don't try to defend anyone.
i was making a point (and failed i guess ).
maybe i should call them tvcap/vhscap heh

Yes, "tvrip" makes you look stupid, whereas "tvcap" is accurate.

Not for nothing but .. do you ever stop complaining?

The last few threads that you have started are essentially you b*tching and moaning about others. Does that not get MORE tiresome to you than the people who actually annoy you?

    No.

Do you see the irony in bitching about someone else bitching about others?

At the very least, it's entertaining enough for people to get involved or read.

Seriously though, the only people who have complained about my posts have turned out to be total nut jobs.

You could have ignored the thread, but you chose to complain.

  17. I'm not so much complaining as making an observation.

It just seems to be endless. For me personally, I find that it takes much more "energy" to complain about stuff than it is to just ignore it.

I'm just curious is all. Nothing more.

Your observation sounds like a complaint. :P

The same can be said about my so-called "bitch" threads, which are FAR outnumbered by my help threads.

There's your answer in that one word. You may be focusing too much on these threads.

Yet you chose not to ignore this and complain about it (in all honesty, you are complaining).

Again, the things that you say can also be applied to you.

There's nothing really to understand. Sometimes there are mere observations and the other times there are valid complaints.

It's odd that of the threads that I've created in OT, the others of which were open to interpretation (people making beyond newbie mistakes), you chose to complain about the one thread that is pretty universally accepted: people shouldn't get help here for obvious illegal activities.

Just be careful not to fall into the deadly spiral which some of the people who disagreed with me fell. You're doing well so far in keeping it civil. If you find that you don't like my threads or responses, just ignore them and use less "energy".
    Quote Quote
  22. I have no reason or see no reason to make it uncivil.

And obviously, I mean no offense (whether you took any or not - something tells me not).

  27. It is amazing how people try to bend the rules by using fuzzy logic. Well my uncles first cousin twice removed left it on a table in plain sight and I thought I would procure it.

When I see something like; 'I downloaded this video, ' Iron.Man.2008.BRRip.XviD.AC3.D-Z0N3 ', and I do a internet search and find that exact same torrent available, then that would be a easy yellow card. Or if they had that exact title in a screen shot.

Not too many people would label their own videos in that fashion and mentioned they downloaded them. But remember, it takes five cards for a ban, unless you do something really bad. Or you spam the site.

If they just said they had a video called ' Iornman ' on their hard drive, that could be a lot of different things. If I'm in doubt, I just lock the thread and usually PM the poster for clarification.

If you think a poster has violated the rules, let the Mods take care of it. Over zealous self policing can create/cause misunderstandings.

Well, sometimes self-policing is the only option when mods don't follow through.

I'd like to point out that DVDRIP is a perfectly acceptable tag to have in a file name. I add that to DVD's that I copy to my ReadyNas and access through Popcorn Hour. There is no conversion in format, I don't compress the DVD's at all. Popcorn Hour reads the specific tag "DVDRIP", this is per the YAMJ Wiki http://code.google.com/p/moviejukebox/wiki/VideoSources.
